Hi all. I have recently finished my dr boogey build. It is working but I find it is not as gainy as I read in descriptions, even at max gain. Basically, I am looking for a Metallica-ish sound. I think the 'metal zone' I cloned comes closer to the sound I am looking for. Am I missing something here? Or is there any mods out there to bring the sound closer to Metallica's?

I am pretty sure that I biased it correctly and it is super silent when on 9v batteries.

hmm, that pedal has a lot of gain... if it still isn't enough, maybe the problem isn't with the pedal? you're connecting the pedal to what amp/speaker?

I think you'll have to tell us how you biased it.
Bringing you yesterday's technology tomorrow.

Its connected to via mic-input to my PC(that's how I normally connect everything)  and it is then voiced out by a solid state 200 watts amp thru  3 subwoofers(6", 8" and 12") and 4 mid to hi frequency drivers(thats quite a mix huh?).

I just saw that I used a 500k pot(by error) for the gain setting. I think this could be the problem.

About biasing, I turned the trimmers up to the point where the preamp produced the loudest signal. I started from the last stage. Each stage is biased at around 5.5v.

I used 500k pot for gain too and still never use the pedal with gain over 3 for dream theater stuff. Check that you got all resistor values right, you may have some voltage divider wrong...

Maybe post a clip so we can see if you're getting the full Boogie sound...

I can get "Metallideth" tone from a modded TS pedal or a TS with a boost in front.
My newest pre-amp in my TDA1519 thread does that type of tone.
But its not quite as heavy as this guys Dr Boogie http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=79501.0
IMO that clip sounds freakin SIC you should check his thread for the sound clip and his mods.
But most of the Dr Boogie clips I have heard sound really good and close to his.
If you dont like his sound I doubt you will like the Dr Boogie pedal.

On listening to it again n again, I now feel there's really a problem somewhere. There's a lot of hard clipping.

I posted a clip here.

Thanks.

Sounds like a misbiased Boogey to me.

1) Double-check that all the component values you used are correct as mentioned earlier.
2) Double-check that your bias voltages are around half your supply voltage. Not a requirement but a must while at this debugging stage.
3) Try to trap stage by stage which part are you getting that farty sound and work from there.

Thanks for your replies. I'll try tapping into each stage and working onwards from there.

some creepy sound you got there, that doesn't sound much like the dr.boogey(but you never know, different guitars/amps/etc may change the sound completely).

shadowmaster said some good ideas, double check everything, measure your voltages(normally should be a bit over 4.5v) and try going stage by stage individually and see how it sounds.
The sound seems to have too much bass, is that with the treble control maxed? maybe you mixed some capacitor value..
