I believe that this:
http://www.diystompboxes.com/analogalchemy/sch/shocktave.html

uses the transistor with diode and 1uf cap plus 47k to 9v as an f to v
converter which feeds the oscillator

What i dont get is how it works

Any takers?

Thanx!!!

I'd sure like to know.  I'd sure like to understand the oscillator section too...but one thing at a time.

If anyone knows where Joe D got these building blocks --appnotes, other schematics, etc, (if not from his own mind), even that would be useful info...

I don't know that I'd classify it as a "true" frequency to voltage converter in the synthesizer sense, but the diode rectifies the signal such that only one half-cycle finds its way to the flip-flop section formed by the dual-transistor pair just before the Mix and Volume controls.  I gather the 1uf cap to ground from the collector of the 3rd transistor adds some lag, and has a sort of "summing function" in that when positive-going half-waves occur frequently, the summed voltage tends to add up.  So, it provides an approximate depiction of frequency interms of voltage, but nothing that provides a true pitch representation that you could feed to a synth VCO and have it play whatever note you had picked.

I think Joe D may have been inspired by this:

In the schemo you can see sections that look like the oscillator of the shocktave. I wonder how that Maestro Octaver sounds... :)

Here is another web page giving explanations on the type of circuit used for the shocktave's f to v:\
