I apologise if this has been covered before, a search didn't turn up anything.

Basically I'm building a GGG tuned muff, I want to swap out the silicon diodes for something more interesting, any reccomendations? I'm after a warm mellow kind of muff, I'm a bassist some I'm modding it for slightly better bass response anyway. I hear the supercollider uses some interesting combination of germaniums?

I've heard and read some stuff that one of the Cornish P or G-2 Fuzzes is something along the lines of a Big Muff with Ge Clippers.  This is the one that Gilmour fancies.

If I was building one I would definitely experimented with a few Ge's as replacements.

I would try a couple IRF520/IN34A combos as clippers in the big muff.  I used them in a Muff Fuzz and it gave a nice chunky overdrive sound as opposed to the straight up fuzz of a pair of IN914s.
