a few years ago i took my turbo rat and both did the ruetz mod (on a switch) and swapped out one of the clipping LED's for a 1N914 (or 4148, i forget). i haven't used it on normal rat mode ever since. i cascade overdrives/distortions for my overall "heavy" sound, so the ruetz mod with the gain at about 2 o'clock is plenty heavy when a very very light overdrive running into a medium overdrive finally gets around to hitting my rat. anyway i'd always liked the way my rat sounded with the gain way down (9/10 o'clock) as my medium overdrive, but considering i only had one i had to use something else to fill that spot. finally i built one up the other day and even added a few bells and whistles (switchable diodes and switchable ruetz) in the hopes that cascading the two with my red snapper in front would be my ideal sound...but even though the new build sounds good it's definitely lacking some midrange character compared to the original. is it most likely just the tl070? my turbo rat has an OP07DP, but is the tl070 actually the culprit? or is it just the fact that a clone might not sound exactly the same as a production model? it sounds very very good, and is pretty close to my perfect sound, but considering them not being identical i wonder if i could get even closer to that perfect cascaded sound.

Since the one you are cloning uses an 070 (presumaly equivalent to the TL070?), I would look first to other circuit differences. Maybe those "bells and whistles"?

i actually have an lm308 that i bought to toss into my turbo rat a while back but i actually prefer the OP07. the 308 sounded too...soft? i only use it on ruetz mode and maybe the fact that the distortion is softened up a bit already with that mod made me prefer the louder, slightly more abrasive OP07.

as far as the other stuff i added...it's all on switches so i would think it wouldn't affect things too much. could be wrong. the clone lacks "bark"...just a bit less mids and sounds a little more tame. this is why i think it could be the chip since the TL070 is a bit more hi-fi.

the obvious thing to do is swap the chips out and see if the OP07 sounds better in my clone, which i will do....but i can't until tomorrow evening and i was just thinking about it and figured i'd ask for opinions here in the meantime.
