Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anyone could recommend a build to me? What I'm after is a simple distortion circuit for metal; plenty of drive for doing pinches, and plenty of clarity for definition on fast picking, and as much tight low-end grunt as possible. I've built Fuzz and OD pedals to my heart's content, and I want another sort of distortion to add to my collection :)

Thanks.

Diefet or X2FET? Or "the bestseller", Dr Boogie.

i think "chaos" is a good, easy one, obsidian also, BSIAB also...

THere is also the Freya, 7th heaven, metal simplex (little lower gain) and the blackfire that come to mind.

Dr. Boogey
BSIAB2
As stated above these two are close.  The biggest bang for your buck is the Metal Simplex.  Try a green LED and two 2N2222 for transistors for less fizz.

Mark Hammer's 'Chaos' looks really interesting, I'll definately be making one of those.

Any idea how to get a more driven sound from the Metal Simplex? I breadboarded one up earlier and I just couldn't get enough cream out of it.

Thanks btw guys, really appreciate the help :)

Dr. Boogie of course... Also look at the burning crunch, Thor, or the crunch box.

dedguy

you could also try Distortus Maximus or Runoffgrooves  Big Daddy... Big Daddy is pretty easy.

Crunch Box sounds ace, and it's flexible too. I'm liking that.

Can't find much info about DIYing one though, would it be fair to say this one's pretty close? Or an exact copy with a name change?

I just completed another DieFET and I have to say that this is perhaps the best.  I am not a metal guy, but if I wanted to peg what I would think of as THE metal tone, it would be this pedal.

I really do fancy the DieFET, but it's such a large build! Is there somewhere I can buy a PCB from? The only PCBs I make are smaller ones that I can draw by hand; tonepad's Pulsar being the largest I've drawn lol. I don't have the facilities to print PCBs you see.

Thanks again :)

There are several members of the forum here who etch boards.  I just had Taylor etch my DieFET board (since my current situation doesn't lend itself to efficient etching) and I know John Lyons does it as well.  There are probably others, but those are the two that I know off the top of my head.  The DieFET is a very large build (especially for someone with few builds) but it is worth every bit of work and patience.  Of course, that's just my dos centavos.

Yeah basically the same.

I've been eyeing up this pedal, the Barber 'Dirty Bomb'

I can't find anything on DIYing it so does anyone know of a similar pedal I could clone that falls within the same ball park?

Thanks again guys, I'm etching that Crunch'd Box as we speak.

if you like the dirty bomb culturejam has an adapted version at fsb or byoc boards.

Looking it up now, looks promising! And it's minus the tone stack, which is good, cuz I hate tone stacks  :icon_mad:

Thanks dude :)

That one should work ok but I just noticed it doesn't have the 20k trim (sort of a presence control) that the newer one has....

I'd say JFET Vulcan! It's a good one!!!
