Effects loop between two effects in one box.

I'm building a triple modulation pedal - Phase 45, FL301 Flanger, EA Trem all in one DD...

I'd like to be able to insert another effect between the Phaser and the Flanger (Actually, I kinda want to be able to put another loop after the flanger and before Trem too, but that's less neccessary).

Anyway, to the point. Originally I was going to add a 4th 3PDT switch to the box for the effects loop - starts to allow less room in the box though, and I'd rather not do that to be honest. So someone at BYOC gave me the idea that you can use a switching jack for the effects loop so that instead of using a stomp switch, plugging a cable into the send jack will activate the loop, and the loop jacks will be bypassed if there are no jacks plugged in.

Hopefully this is clear, but if not let me know. The problem is - I don't know what kind of jacks I need to use nor do I have a wiring diagram to do it. A guy at BYOC has said he'd post about it and I will wait on that, but I imagine that some of you guys could help me out too. Any wiring or jack location ideas for me?

Check out R.G.'s "Jimi in a Box" article. It covers the concept of what you are trying to do. (link)

An example of the type of jack you would want to use is the Neutrik NMJ4HC-S (link).

I hope that helps. :)

that's it exactly!

Now what I need is a good example of a wiring diagram. As far as jacks are concerned, it seems that one from Neutrik will work, but I like the open jacks from switchcraft or neutrik, are there open versions of this normalizing jack?

OK, I've never actually done this before, but I am planning to. I'm doing something similar, but with 10 effects in one box.

I've done my own drawing, not tested, but maybe it will give you a better idea and allow you to do your own drawing. Take a look here: link. You plug-in to Input A, and signal flows to Input B, then Input C. The pairs of wires on the left side are external cables, and they represent the connections being made internally by the jack. If I drew it right, you should be able to run an output (Output A, for example) to the input of an external effect, and run the output of that external effect back into the unit (Input B, for example). I don't have time at the moment to do a good explanation of how (I think) it works, but maybe you can figure it out by tracing the signal flow in your head.

For the jacks, I plan on using the enclosed Neutrik jacks. I'm not 100% sure which open-framed jacks are switched. Taking a look at this page of the Mouser catalog, it appears as though the Switchcraft 12A might work.

What about these jacks? Http://www.smallbearelec.com/Detail.bok?no=88

I'm trying to understand your diagram, but not sure I'm getting it. I'm using 3PDT on the three effects in the box with each getting it's own LED, one 9V power supply.

So I think I need it even dumbered down for me.

If someone can give me a line drawing (colour coded?) of two boards, each with their own 3PDT switches, LED's and effects board, and how to go from the output of the first 3PDT switch, through the switching jack for the effects loop and then to the input of the the 2nd 3PDT, so that it inserts an effect in between the 1st and second boards ONLY when jacks are plugged in that would be awesome.

I think you're close .Mike.
