Hi guys
I want to build an onboard preamp for a bass guitar to switch from passive to active, does anybody know of a good preamp I can build to fit inside the bass ??
Thanks

Renegadrian

Yeah there are some - see the submarine schematic or the schematic in the "Projects for electric guitar" by j. chatwin.

Yes, but they all require active components and power supply, which can be tricky to neatly get in there, the circuit boards and parts for these things are relatively easy to get together and preview before installing in the guitar.
I used a test stompbox with the switch and potholes, swapping circuits in this 'wrapper' to find one for installing.

I've built these for guitars, nice, modest gain [which is probably a good idea for bass amping @9v], sweet tone, you might want to use a larger output or source bypass capacitor, they're fairly large as shown, I used a DPDT/100k for both the pickup volume, and the Stratoblaster volume, slightly modified to produce only 15% or so boost over pickup unity, this helps prevent amazing overload tones when switching.
That can be a nice stamp-sized circuit.
Bipolar circuit can be ~the same size, opamp circuits start taking up elbow room, may draw more current etc.

Convention creates following, following creates convention.

search for "bajaman" musicman stingray bass preamp,  either here or on the "other" forum.....   also musicman sabre preamp.
These go inside the guitar controls cavity,  or can be made into a stompbox.....

there is:

There was also a bartolini preamp schematic floating around on this forum somewhere.

Since i don't have the need for any eq past my tone control, i've just got a voltage buffer using high quality fet opamp. My pickups are pretty "active" sounding as it is.
Though it'd be simple enough to make a tiny buffer->tonestack->makeup gain preamp using a low-power dual opamp.
To get that "modern active" sound, you'd probably wanna include a ultra low and ultra high boost in there.

Hey guys 10x for replying......
the two that caught my eye were GGG's stratoblaster circuit and the http://www.albertkreuzer.com/preamp_onboard.htm  onboard jfet pre amp..
which one of these would you recommand ???
thanks

Jarno

I've tried "simple" FET preamps for bass, on 9V, but I didn't really like the sound. Because of the higher output, they tend to distort on loud notes. If that's your thing, go for it, I like opamp preamps better, and I think pushpull/ SRPP/ muamp FET preamps might be very good as well, but haven't tried this myself.

+1 for the musicman preamp by Bajaman, simple, ballsy sound, good tonecontrols, excellent.

Could someone put up a link to the Submarine Layout???  Id prefer a PCB Layout but if not Vero will work.

Renegadrian

Search, my friend...And you'll find...
I have personally made a VERO layout of the Submarine (I uploaded in my gallery), which is said to be very close to the Kreutzer circuit! (I read it in the other forum, if my memory still serves...)
I'm gonna upload my VERO of one of the Chatwin book schems.
