Given the above schematic (thanks Aron :icon_biggrin:)
I was considering building this as a separate box.   In the initial post with this schematic Aron said:
"This one sucks up a lot of level so put it after a gain stage or use a gain stage after it to compensate if it sucks out too much volume."

The question I have, If I am running X distortion (X being one or more fuzz's/overdrive i have in line) and a compressor after, would i necessarily need anything else other than whats shown in the schem (another gain stage? buffer?)

My thought is the signal already running to the tone stack would be hot, and the compressor after would also boost any loss of signal. but Maybe im missing something. Any thoughts? Thanks

You pretty much hit the nails squarely.
Tonestacks are: passive = signal loss.
  How much signal loss.
Go figure or compare, but after the trial is where the thoughts begin to really cement.
Is it a high output impedance that the passive loss is trying to draw from or is it working better when driven harder by a low output impedance ?
The volume part is easy, depending on the TMB settings, you'll know if you want/need a booster.
I don't know whether to put it before or after though.
Buffer before and boost after would of course TCOBusiness, whether that's the optimal option or noption.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

My first thought is to build it with something like a booster, either after or before, that way you can compensate for any volume lost.

It used to be standard to assume you'd get an average of 20db (10x) loss in a passive tone control in the neutral position. This was usually followed by a 10X gain recovery stage. Of course, nothing is standard in effects.  :icon_biggrin:

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.
