Part Storage (diodes, transistors, etc)

A number of parts come from the suppliers in anti static bags, diodes, transistors, etc. Is it OK to store these types of items outside the shipping bags? I need to get organized, I have a bunch of the clear plastic cheapo plastic storage bins. Would that be acceptable for loose storage? The little bags are driving me crazy.

My understanding is that IC's and transistors can be touchy (although I've never had a problem), but resistors, diodes, capacitors, wire, jacks, switches, etc. have no need to be "static proofed."  Hope this helps.

Rule of thumb: if you have had two or more IC or tranny failures in your builds, you probably have a problem with static buildup.  The components are sooooooo reliable that some external event has to happen to them to cause failure, and static is normally the most likely culprit.

BTW, we've all felt static shocks when we've taken off our nylon stockings in a hurry (haven't we?), but silicon components can be duffed by voltages BELOW the level at which we can feel them.  So you may have a problem but not be aware of it.

Also, static might not cause your components to fail instantaneously, but it can kinda weaken them so that they fail prematurely.

If you store a load of ICs in a single pot, you run the risk of mullering a bunch of them when you dip your hand in.
