Hello,

I googalized, but I can't find what fuzz/distorsion have used John Wetton on the King Crimson's albums, especially on "Red".
Anyone knows?

Thx all!

John Lyons

Robert Fripp used a big muff and a Burns Buzzaround.
Did wetton use a fuzz? I'd imagine is was just some
tube amp overdrive.

Jen Double Sound fuzz/wah

Hmm... I built one of those a few years ago. I never really have used it at all.

Robert used to use a Foxy too, well, kind of BM anyway... but he repeats any old school good fuzz had the job done.

i think Wetton used some overdriven amplifier in some situations, but I must agree with a lot of people the RED bass sounds are awesome!

Well the entire album is an amazing classic!

Yeah, "Red" is a good album, and those bass tones on there are pretty cool. It took a while for the album to grow on me, but it did eventually.

In the liner notes to "The Great Deceiver" (live stuff from 1973-1974) Fripp says Wetton used a Foxx Fuzz Wah.

"What a lucky man, he was..."
I know, it's another bass player, but from the same band... :icon_biggrin:

I've looked here http://www.effectsdatabase.com/model/foxx and I saw a lot of effects made by Foxx, but I found the schematic only for Foxx Tone Machine, Clean Machine and Fuzz-Wah (http://www.freeinfosociety.com/media/pdf/4067.pdf).
Anyone knows others?

Cool stuff. "Red" is great.

Offtopic: I'd love to know what Fripp used on the "Baby's on Fire" solo...(Eno.)

Robert, like other great musicians, achieves more on his aproach to the whole equipment than just using a specific device. What I mean is that he can get the same sort of sound, eventhough not identical, imposing his way on different devices. i think it counts a lot...

gigimarga

I must confess I didn't know that one...

Fripp is wrong about the Foxx pedal. Wetton used a Jen Double Sound pedal (fuzz/wah) during that time.

I know this because Wetton told a friend of mine this at a CD signing. Wetton was gracious enough to write out his equipment list from that period, which my friend later sent to me.

Thank you very much Aldebaran :)
I have an Jen Double Sound Fuzz, but it seems to me that I haven't the talent of John Wetton :)

Aldebaran

No problem, gigimarga.

Quick slightly off-topic question, since you have a Jen Double Sound. I just got one from eBay, but I can't get FX out if it. I added a fresh nine-volt battery, and I can get a clean sound through it, but no fuzz or wah. It toggles on and off through the pedal, and then you choose either distortion or distortion plus wah from the toggle switch on the right, correct? Am I missing anything? (I e-mailed the seller, but haven't yet gotten a reply. Hope I don't have to fight over this!)

I have a jen double sound I got super cheap because it was finiky and sometimes wouldn't pass signal

turned out the wire had almost broken inside the inductor

de-solder that carefully (as you can melt the plastic on those things) and check its continuity

other than that cant think

I just re attached the wire inside the inductors case and use it like that but If I were to use it more often I would replace the inductor

the fuzz is a great big sounding silicon fuzz face
easyface, phase 90,many fuzz faces, feedback looper, tremulus lune and so on soon to be ADA!
