was thinking about spraying some of the red glitter paint over the top one my choice of red coat and then clear coating it. Anyone have an warnings/advice/DONT EVER DO THIS!!!!!!!11?

Also i have a 8mm LED that i might use as an indicator anyone ever used one this size before? and what size resistor is preferable?

Thanks

I've used Automotive Metal Flake, and I would consider that to be a better option.

I've also used 8mm LED's. They're big. Real big. Pretty cool if that's what you're going for.

chears mate,

Think ill give this stuff a go just done a test and the clear coat and base coat seem to take it ok. will post results when im done. Think ill have a go at the 8mm LED to (you only live once eh?) bigger sometimes is better.

No doubt. It looks cool in the pedals I've done. I don't like the dinky 3mm LED's but sometimes they're neccessary. I much prefer the 5mm though cause they're easier to work with. But still, the 8mm are pretty cool looking.

If you use glitter paint, make sure you don't try to sand the colour coat smooth because you'll end up sanding through some of the glitter and it'll look pretty nasty.

I found that the 8mm bezels sold by SmallBear are a bit tough to use because the threaded portion is almost the same size as the exterior part of the bezel: the hole needs to be drilled to very tight tolerances to avoid the bezel just slipping through the material it's mounted in.

just tried to find a resistor for the 8mm LED using croc clips and a 9v worked my way down from 3.3k to 1k and still no Light from it am i missing something? the LED definitely still works as i measured it. What value would you suggest? id use a data sheet to work this out as its pretty simple but its just a random LED i found.

1k = 9mA... should be safe anywhere up to at least 25mA with most 8mm LEDS...

If it's not a high-brightness LED, you might struggle to see it at low currents

try 470 ohms, around 20mA as a starting point

8mm?  never seen that, cool though!  there are some massive 10mm blue ultra-brights in my neck of the woods at Dick Smith, gonna pimp one of my pedals i think...OTT all the way!   ;)

EDIT:  I forgot to say, why don't you just breadboard diff resistors with the led, find the right one?  or does it have to be in-circuit?
