I built the runoffgrove big daddy 386 op amp based pedal today, I used the j201 in the input pregain stage, but when I 1st put it in and tried it, I had the transistor upside down and all I got was loud hum with the volume knob all the way down even. So I looked up the pinout and flipped it around, and I tried again, same thing.... What did I do? Burn out the transistor ?

Just try a new FET and you have the answer.

If it is still not working start debuggin, which means, start checking for bad connection, for wron parts. If everything is ok, start measuring voltages. Check if your offboard connection is ok, a lot of times that could be a problem. There are so many things you can do on yourself. If still nothing, start audioprobing.
If that won;t help, come back and people will help you, but you can do soo much without help, so try all that first.

I realized I forgot to solder my jacks to the circuit ground, they are connected together, but not to the circuit, I am on break at work, and I have no way of fixing it yet lol. And I have yet to buy me a multimeter, can't afford one yet :-(
come august I'll get one for my birthdy

My philosophy, the more interesting the title is, the more likely you will get people to read it?

Are you asking us if it's your philosophy or telling us?

Haha using my iPhone, new to the texting I mean to put a "!" not a "?" lol, anyways, could my ground connections cause that hum I described

What is the negative terminal of your battery attached to?  How about the board ground wire?
Try a little tenderness.

I don't use battery, I just connected the center of the dc Jack to the ground input of the circuit. However the jacks are not connected to the ground of the circuit yet, the jacks grounds are connected

Connect a wire from the board ground to the input jack ground.

Could that cause a ridiculous hum as soon as I turn on my amp while testing it out?

Highly likely. It's even bets on whether it will pass signal or not, but there'll be mains hum on top of it, since you're effectivily breaking the circuit by not compleating the ground circuit. If it still doesn't work, chances are it's the FET, but since it's a new build anything do it
Looks like we're gonna need a bigger amp.

Just to "get to pitch" you need a trimmer. That's why guitars have knobs, and why xylophone makers have power grinders. - PRR

What kind of power supply are you using?
Try a little tenderness.
