no need for primer?

how many "hands" of paint?

how much last to dry?

clearcoat (acrylic over the paint at last)?

ive used black rustoleum, hammertone paint before, no primer. its advertized as a paint that will go over rust etc and it works  well. i first tried it on an old table base that was very rusty, wire brushed off most of the rust and then hit it with paint, was impressed at its covering ability as well as its ease of use and it looks good. its pretty 'goof proof' as spray paint goes, read the can and follow the directions. ;)

oh yeah, one more thing, the black hammertone paint has an almost 'faux tolex' look. which is cool too.
i think its a great product. as long as your looking for a hammered finish.its pretty durable as well.
+1 rustoleum hammertone spraypaint.

I love hammertone paint.  I use Rust-oleum "Hammered" from the can.  Typically I simply sand the enclosure down a bit and clean it before applying.  I typically do a coat then bake at 150 degrees for 45 minutes, let it cool for 10 minutes, and repeat until the coat looks good.  Then I typically do a couple of clear coats in the same manner.  The paint is really durable and you can't beat the look!  Only problem is most places only have black, gray and brown.  I was lucky enough to find some green recently and it's absolutely stunning.  Here's a pic of a superfuzz I made recently with the gray:

at some point i said i would do a picture tutorial, and i forgot.  I may have time next week, but here are the tips I just send to richon in a PM.

For now, here's my tips in a summary.

I use Rust-oleum Brand Hammertone Spray Paint.  http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=29

First make sure the boxes are clean. I usually start with fresh boxes, and wipe with a tack cloth (sticky cheese cloth type thing from the hardware store, very cheap).

Then I do 3-4 coats of Rust-oleum's "Clean Metal Primer".  15 minutes apart.  This helps the paint stick really well, as well as making the box off-white, so you can see the color change better and know you are coating it well.

15 Minutes after the last primer coat, I go with the Hammertone Spray.  It goes on in 2 coats.  The first coat needs to be thinner and just cover all of the primer.  I let this dry for about 30 minutes.

The second coat needs to go on nice and thick.  Almost thick enough that it would run.  The thicker, the better the texture.

However, Make sure that no paint drips from the can onto the box, this will create a big "spot".  Also, make sure no dirt or hair or anything falls into the wet paint.  It's best to make yourself a "lean-to" box for this.  Just a leaning cardboard box that you can sit over the enclosure to keep dust and dirt from falling on it, but it lets air get to it to dry.  I've also taking the enclosures inside and put them under a small lamp to speed up drying time.

Let it dry for at least 24 hours.

I highly recommend hitting it with 4-5 light coats of Matte or Gloss Clear Top Coat, to seal and protect.  I usually do this after applying dry transfer letters, which is another ordeal entirely.

The best figured one I have done

Mixing colors on the fly

Self etching primer (duplicolor)
Cold paint (put in the fridge)
Low humidity, HEAVY single coat.
Trial and error (as always)

IMO a single coat is key. Spray one wet coat and then let it be. If you spray another coat before it cures you will lose texture and depth.

WOW

those brown and gold paints are exactly what I was looking for  :icon_eek:

i've found that spraying a lighter, thin first coat and heavier second coat works better than a single thick coat.

I have not had any time to do painting in the past week or so and now I'm in San Francisco for a week, but here's some albums of examples of hammertone done using the process I outlined earlier with Rust-oleum Sprays.  I'm curious to try the Duplicolor stuff, anyone know where I can get it?

Very cool work aziltz! Congratulations!
What is the "Bass Flanger"? What is the "ADA/MXR" switch for?
