Best metal distortion?

Looking for a deep rich distortion.  Something along Black album era Metallica, Creed or Ebanesence.  Years ago I did a Tube Screamer with increased value pot, and it wasn't bad.  Seems like it still needed some low end though.  Aside from building a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier, is there any petals which are decent for this kind of sound?
Builds: INA217 based mic preamp, 12k5 based tube amp, Ruby amp, fOXX Tone Machine

oldrocker

Not a triple rect but for a dual rectifier pedal you could build a BSIAB2. (Brown Sound In A Box)
I just pulled mine out and jammed on it for an hour.  With humbuckers it can be a darn heavy distortion.  Or for a simpler build try Howie's Metal Simplex.  For a more complicated build the Dr. Boogey has a good heavy Marshall tone.

humptydumpty

theres the chaos, ive yet to build it though, so idk personally

Search for "Diefet" on this forum and check out the sound samples. It is a JFET based simulation of a Diezel VH4 and it nails that Black album tone.

yep thats the sound im after..

ive built the boogies..nice through an amp...no hiss too for a hi gainer...eq can be a bit moody though..not enough scoop...

but well worth a build.......

i built the chaos...scrapped it...not hi gain enough..

i built the distortus maximus...not really as i would have hopeed..but am modding it currently....

havent done the diefet.(weird voltage doubler needed for that one..)........am in the process of the x2fet though!......

i like the sound of the nano pocket metal muff...and there is a scott ian (anthrax) black 13 pedal.....really heavy pedal out there (commercially..)

check that out on youtube.....its mean. :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted:

the quest for the meanest distortion continues......

Rob, did you try sans amp from tonepad? I think it can give some hi-gain stuff but it's up to you to decide if you like it or not - I love it :)
I use boogie when I want to play pantera-ish stuff but sans amp for other (like Black) stuff (I call mine sim-amp hehe)

I'm on the same quest, and while I've found some awesome distortion boxes I need something with an EQ or need to build an EQ. I have a Sansamp GT-2 which is cool, but no mid control which is kinda needed in metal. I just finished a BSIAB last night, but need to fix a couple things on it. So far it does sound very Van Halen-esque. I think it should be able to pull off any cranked Marshall sounds (think Slayer).

I'm thinking that I want to do the Box of Metal and a Dr. Boogey and then call it quits on distortion boxes.

Yes the metel scooped tone is all in the EQ.  The way the MT2 works is all in the filtering sections.

I haven't heard a single sample of the BSIAB that impressed me. I built one for giggles and this thing is pretty awesome!

A lot of metal guys go overboard with gain and don't give a lot of thought about overall tone. It'd be easy to pull of a Slayer sound with the BSIAB.

I have tried to keep this from being forgotten.  It is a dual-mu amp like the BSIAB, but has a different tone circuit at the end with a big scoop. More Metal than the BSIAB.  Doug Hammon designed it and I redrew it.  Might give you some ideas to try on the BSIAB type circuits.   :icon_cool:

Also the Obsidian and Vulcan.

It's about the filtering... :icon_twisted:

All of you guys need to listen to the sound clips on this page >http://www.guitarjfet.ru/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=30&Itemid=34
These are some of the best sounding metal/amp sims I have heard >period !
The SLO100 and Krankenstien sound amazing,as does the Buzzfall.
Just let Google translate the Russian to whatever language you prefer, and click on the schematics to enlarge and save.
I plan to breadboard these as soon as I clear some room on my breadboard.
I also posted cross refrence page and Zap Branigan listed a few cross's as well in this thread >http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=83787.0

WGTP, any samples of that Sweet 16?

Brymus, those are some awesome sounds.  That one called VHT MK was the one that caught my eye.  Loved that one.

EQ, two letters for metal as a place to start.
Allows the finding of what it isn't / what it is that isn't/is working now.
All that is shown on the graph you gravitate to when adjusting everything everything, then including the EQ.
Not that everything and the EQ are in anyway separate, everything has everything to do with EQ.
Assuming the cables and such's..and the amp has.. and the guitar puts out but not too heavy on the..and
That's why EQ is so helpful here, there or here-there even.
The frequency ''shape'' going into the clipping elements...very important what the pre-EQ [voicing of box? EQ?] feeds the 'distorter section'...be it Jfets Bipolars, Opamps with diodes or anyof them.
Also, after the distortion has gnawed off some of the signal leaving a rag-tagged set of remains, an EQ here can then shape the HF"s to be enough but less than precision shave sharpness, the bass...
The bass is where the 'everything else' really comes in. Everything else between where the small signal and the perciever is...walls...cones...''airs''...cabinets...everything.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

Guitarfreak

What perfect timing, I just made a comparison clip of a distortion pedal on the clean channel vs. my amp's gain channel.  Hoping to prove that distortion pedals just don't cut it when it comes to really giving you that sense of power.  Check it out, let me know what you think, I'm not going to tell you what order the clips are in though  ;D
