removing letting from Boss pedals?

I'm still not grasping why the need to retain the original color.  That seems to be the big challenge here: eliminating the letters but keeping the undercoat.  Why not just sand the lettering down and spray over it?  If I legend a box (rub-on transfer lettering with clearcoat over top), and decide it needs changing or perhaps recycling for a different effects, I know the letters are going to show through whatever I put over top, so the letters and paint get removed entirely, and the whole thing gets painted again.  Alternatively, if I can get away with it, the legending gets picked and sanded off, the new lettering gets a couple of coats of clear stuff, and everything is nice and shiny again.
