On the search for a pre made box i came accross this

got me thinking that you could use this (mounting the speaker on the flat side) and then have a variable state guitar cab to some extent. Meaning you could decide wether you wanted open or a closed back cab. Im sure some of you are going to tell me that this is crazy due to the cab not being sealed etc but what do you think? is it worth a shot? going to be building a ruby amp soon and have a 8ohm 175w 10'' speaker i could put in it. would some dampening be a good idea if i were to totally hack this breadbin?

That was one of the key features of the original Pignose.  You could open it up by various amounts to change the resonant properties of its little enclosure.  The many different tones produced were what made it so popular for recording.

If I'm not mistaken, SMF made an amp in recent years that had an adjustable rear panel that could yield different degrees of open-vs-closed cab.

So, yeah, give it a whirl. :icon_biggrin:

damn pig nose i thought i had a viable business idea there.  ;) anyway i may well look into it. I could see the shoddy build of the 'roller back' causing vibration noise against the cab when driven at high volumes however........theres always rockwool

Kinda like an extra-large, variable port.  A bigger opening means a higher resonant frequency.  But once you open it up larger than a certain size, the resonant peak goes above what the speaker can make, and it appears to do nothing.

My experience with this is with a tiny practice cab.  I used a 4" speaker and an open back, and listened while I moved a bit of foam board over the opening.  The most bass and best sound was with a very tiny port, maybe 2" square.

if you open that breadbin the lid goes to the back so it will hit the speaker.
