I'll show it again when I box it up tomorrow

CLIPS!!

My playing is terrible. I had no idea what to play once I pressed record. The setup is crap too. But you don't need much to show this pedals awesomeness. I'm dissapointed in the octave up clip since I wanted to demonstrate how cool it is when the clean and octave up are blended and you play chords. But my playing was terrible and I think I had too much octave in the mix. Or actually it might've souned good through the amp I was monitering through. I spent literally ten minutes on this. So gimme a break.

The pedals tracking is also not really showcased in these clips. Some points I wasn't plucking hard enough, and some I was plucking too close to the bridge. I mostly stuck on the bridge pickup, tho I did use the neck pick up for some of the octave up and the neck for some of the octave down, but no tone control.

octave up:

First i give bypassed signal tone. Then I turn the pedal on and the clean mix is at the same level. I mess with the clean control, then blend in some octave, then gradually turn the clean down. The octave up can add some nice harmonics, or some grit.

octave down:

I used it alone, blended it with the clean, and then messed with the mid boost.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4685682/demos/down.mp3

All blended:

Messed with some of the many combinations and tones yuo can dial in. I ran an Orange Squeezer before the chopped OC-2 in this clip.

With other pedals:

Used an Orange Squeezer, Big Muff, a Rat, then Tube Screamer before a Vox Wah modded as a volume pedal, then kicked in the wah. All the octaves were blended in to some degree.

If you can bear the playing, this will give you an idea of what this thing can do. The trackin is alot better than in the clip. The noise is NOT the pedal. I had forgotten to turn a few things off before doing this, including one of those Ionic Breeze air purifier things.

The clips were recored with a slightly modded -b Indonisian Squire strat - Chopped OC2 - 12AU7 preamp running on 12v with a fender tone stack - Belton Digital Reverb - Marshall Cab Sim - Computer soundcard and Audacity.

I promise the clips from when it's boxed up will be more musical, and less poignant to listen to all the way through. But doens't the thing sound aweomse?!@

Yep, sounds cool. It's definitely making me want to finish up my PCB project for the thing.

updated schem to include credit

Thanks!  Idea, you could feed the Push Me Pull You octave, with the heavily lowpass filtered signal coming out of IC1, pin 14, to get a cleaner octave up.  That would do the same thing as the 3 pole filter mod for the Green Ringer.  I noticed the Foxrox Octron has that option in it.

El Heisenberg

Crap! I literally JUST finished boxing it up and painting it. Bwah!

I guess ill open it up and try.

El Heisenberg

I havent been able to find a schematic of the foxrox octron. Anyone have one???

I'm gunna open the chopped OC-2X in a bit and try that out. I have to open it up anyway because the stomp switch is misbehaving. There's a delay when I turn it on. Stupid switches.

Don't think there's a schematic about, couple of gut shots if you wanna take a shot at tracing it but that's it... uses a CD4019 two Dual Op Amps and two Quad Op Amps if that rings a bell for something simmilar.

Ah, just Mr. Milner eluded to knowing something about how it looked so I assumed there was one out there.

Anyway, the change worked like a charm. It's fantastic! It does reduce the volume or the presence of the octave up a little, but its cool. I did it with an spdt switch. Now I gotta think of some other mod so I can have another switch on the other side of the enclosure ot make it look symmetrical.

I'm thinkin a tiny boost to the push me pull you, or is there something cool I can do with that 4013 with an SPDT or a DPDT switch?

this is it so far

this mod was so simple I can't beleive I didnt see it. So stupid.

In the video demos from Foxrox he shows a block diagram of how it works which is the same as you've got there with the switch option too, i'll assume that's where he got his information from.

To be honest, I don't think this is going to be too far off that design sound wise.

El Heisenberg

You're right...This is just a great alternative to the foxrox octron lol!

I hate to ask such a question:

Can you put the output of the CD4013 on a scope for me?  I am building the Ampeg Octaver and just want to be sure what to look for.

The interesting this is its close to the Boss, but it uses a P channel fet were Q1 is. Im modding the circuit to take my j201's wich I have plenty.

Thanks! :)

Ben N

Only slightly OT, this lools like it could make for a good modding project as well. I'll have to crack open my Arion octave divider, which according to a partial schematic on the web is pretty similar, if not nearly identical to the Boss. It might be fun to rehouse with a daughter board for octave up, mid-boost.

El Heisenberg

Definetly.

I want to add a distortion or overdrive to the clean channel. A switchable one, to match the switch on the left side of my box to turn on the octave up filter. I'm looking at easy drive and electra distortion right now...gunna breadboard. Bass fuzz is way too distorted. I jsut want a nice but of dirt next to a clean octave down for a bass guitar + OD guitar combo sound.

El Heisenberg

well I had two schems in front of me. I know there's tons of simple ODs and distortions, but I jut picked two. Easy Drive and Electra Distortion. I breadboarded the Electra first and I think I'm going with that. Im not even gunna breadboard the easy drive. I might be missing outt....but the Electra distortion sounds freakin great. and it's simple.

El Heisenberg

I dunno where/how to stick a distortion in the clean mix. If I put it after the first buffer and before the output transistor there will be problems.

Hi, this is the HOCTA. I've built it in 2008 around the chopped OC2 and the upper octave of the EH microsynth.
4 samples :
Hocta21.mp3 - upper octave only (with mod switch in the second part)
Hocta22.mp3 - upper + clean (with mod switch in the second part)
Hocta23.mp3 - upper + down (with mod switch in the second part)
Hocta24.mp3 - like hocta23 but in the first frets
For the samples go to :

The mod switch is a switch that change the upper octave shape

El Heisenberg

Sounds great! Any schematic??

I was thinkin about building my next one with three stomp switches. So i can engage the octaves each seperately. Since the clean would always be on when the middle stomp is engaged ill need to add a switchable distortion.
