Hey guys!

I'm gonna start breadboarding the Dr. Boogey in the next week or two..I want to make it a real metal machine, without it becoming a squeal/hiss box.  Any recommendations for mods/different values etc?  Sheilded wiring; which connections?  Which layout to use?  Anything at all you can think of.   :)

cheers
Phil

I just built one using the layout at gaussmarkov's.
His layout has all the improvements you can imagine.
An extra option that seems to be popular is to have two different gain pots that are selected by a switch.

Here's the ultimate Dr Boogey builder resource list.

I'm very happy with mine.
I do have some squeal issues at (very) high volumes, but I need to find out whether it's the pedal or me standing too close to the amp.

Hey Phil these changes made a huge difference in my build >
change C1 and C6 from 1uf to .68uf and change C13 from 30n to 68n
These values don't have to be exact, just lower C1-C6 to taste and raise C13 till you like it :icon_wink:
Also a small but significant change was making C3 3n3 instead of 2n2 and changing R4 to 1M from 680K
These changes really gave me a much improved sound from my Dr Boogie, its not perfect but it got rid of the "farty" sound,
and changing C13 made the presence control much more usable.

The Amazing Farting Pedal...gotta hear this one  :)  what specific thing/s did the changes affect, apart from fartiness?

C1 and C6 are bypass caps they effect what frequencies are boosted, using lower values only boosts higher frequencies. The smaller the cap the higher the frequencies that are boosted.
The bigger the cap the more/lower frequencies are boosted. This of course sets the knee at what point the effect becomes less...
Changing C3 bigger allows more lows through, raising R4 attenuates more signal and increases the effect of C3.
I would guess more is going on I am not aware of with those two componenst as well...
Increasing the presence cap increases its filter/effect on the tone.Someone else can give you a more detailed explanation as to what kind of filters ,ect.
Or use the search button and look up high pass / low pass filters.

Maybe someone else can chime in and give a better ,more detailed expalnation of what those components do.
I basically use the A/B approach...

a/b?  as in, it does either one or the other?

hi phil..i built that vero boogie...with the altered values...

its way brighter than the gaussmarkov version..but too bright to my numb ears...

sounds ok....but.

its got way too much treble....

not enough mid scoop...

and very little bass...

i;ll try the above cap changes on it and see what happens...

as it stands i have to have the mid all the way down...
treble at 11-12 oclock..
pres at 12
bass hardly there really...so id like to see/hear what you get out of the mods on b/board.....

Which reminds me I made my bass pot 250K,
That sums up all the changes I made, and I like enough I dont feel like changing anything else.
It has great range in the tone stack and presence, plenty of bass.

Phil A/B means I try A value and compare to B value and decide which I like better rather than looking up the formulas and doin the math and deciding that way.

ayayay!

I'd really recommend adding an output buffer to this.  I built two of them, and the one with the buffer is better by far.  For one thing, it "plays" with other pedals MUCH better w/ a buffer.

I know there's a schemo in one of the threads here somewhere that has a simple JFET output buffer, which is what I used.  It cuts a tiny bit of bass, but I didn't think it was a big deal since there seems to be plenty on tap anyway.  I think a different breed transistor buffer would have been better though.
