hi!

i'm wondering as to what is the best signal path?

gtr>fx>di box>cab sim>sound card
or
gtr>fx>di box>sound card>cab sim

thanks!

Guitar>FX>Cab Sim>DI BOX>Sound Card

or have the Cab sim happen in the computer could be an option, but usually you'd use a hardware cab sim before DI.

Also, it's good to use a reliable amp emulator/preamp before that cab sim also. Something like an amp emulator from ROG is what I would consider, or a preamp pedal made by any number of manufacturers out there...

thanks!

"Guitar>FX>Cab Sim>DI BOX>Sound Card"
the FX would be boogey or bsiab2, are we to consider these two as preamp?

so you're suggesting that i use a preamp as well for clean part? (like prof tweed maybe?)

How about using cabinet impulses instead of cab sim?

Like this:

Guitar -> Fx -> (amp + dummy load) -> sound card -> Daw + plugin for impulses such as KeFir.

For impulses I'd recommend the Redwire impulses but there are also a lot of pretty good impulses for free.

I have no idea what Cabinet impulses are. Care to explain that one? Sounds interesting.

Ok, here's a short explanation. I'm not really an expert on impulse responses and convolution, though...

An impulse response is a bit like a sonic fingerprint of the source (guitar cabinet in this case). You could, for example, have an impulse respose of a Marshall 1960 cabinet miced with a SM57. Using this impulse file (wav) with your daw and appropriate plugin you can emulate the sound you'd get if you were running your setup through an actual 1960 cab.

There's a bit more info on the Redwire site:

http://www.redwirez.com/

Ps. I don't want this to sound like a weak attempt at Redwire spam - you can get a ton of good impulses for free, but these are (imho) the best. Besides they are like 8$ a set of 600 impulses...
