which transistors do you like in the shin-ei fuzz clone?

Sorry if this has been covered, I was certain it would have been, but I didn't find as much as I expected. What transistors have people found satisfactory in the Shin Ei fuzz project from GGG in place of the originals that aren't available anymore?

Thanks!

I don't know about other folks, but I walk into a store that sells Japanese transistors, and they have the requisite 2SC536F.  I stick 'em in and they work.

Could anyone point me to a place online (or in NYC) where I could find these?

Thanks!

I finally finished building mine a couple of days ago.   It is awesome.  I put sockets in for the two trannies.  Right now I have a BC108B and BC109B in and I think their hfe's are in the range as reported by Mark.  Sounds pretty good.  Try out Mark's mid scoop mod if you can, add some nice variation.  A great easy little circuit.  Want to try out the Fuzzrite and the Orpheum to compare.   As well as Doug Deeper's Psych Fuzz.

Hey Mark,

Would you suggest using the requisite 2SC536F's in the Companion?

Just wondering because a friend asked if I had found a good sub for the 2SC536F.  I just am using
what I have that seems to be in the close hfe range.  Since you have expressed such passion towards
this circuit so much, I value your opinion, as I now love this circuit.  My favorite build so far...

I buy my Japanese semiconductors from a small place in Toronto: http://www.honson.com/electronic/price.exe/Transistor&20

Thanks Mark. No price there for that one so I'm assuming they don't have them in stock. Guess I could give them a call, unless someone knows of another source.

Ok, just spoke with them and they did have the, at .45 a piece. They don't normally do shipping orders for small quantities, though, so there was a $15 handling fee. So I got 10, works out to $2.20 a piece. Cheaper than I was seeing on ebay and from what sounds like a reliable source at least. Thanks again and thanks Richard for the help and suggestions as well.

Japanese junk used whatever available cheap audio transistor of the moment. 2SC828 (Q, R, S, and T), then 2SC536 (F, G), then 2SC1815 (Y, G, BL).

2SC1815's can still be found cheap on ebay. I bought a bunch of 2SC1815GR's from seller "thaishopetc" and got good service.
