multiplexer for audio switching

hi everyone
does anyone got some resources docs or similar to learn more about multiplexer used to switch parts? I've seen '80s rack that use those more or less as we do with rotary switches..but obviously with digital control. I study computer science so no problem finding the right switching function, but how to implement a multiplexer inside an audio path?
