hi guys,

was playing around with the thing modulator and tried to combine two of them.
you can play around with the freq knobs and can adjust amounts of both.. or even single one out.
it has some beep on some positions, but can also be very cool for bass or guitar or whatever..

it has been verified by myself.. i've built from this layout.. mind you.. youll have to connect the 2 grounds ;)

Funny, I discovered the same thing a couple of days ago when I had my window open while playing with a few fx I built.

i'm going to start a ring modulator support group  ;D

FUZZZZzzzz

i've made a big mistake  :o
i boxed the double thing modulator and gave it to my my bassplayer for his bday, but then realized
that i forgot to make a soundsample.. but no worries i have a couple of those ics laying around the house.
i will breadboard and try again.. sorry guys!!

ring modulator support group would also make a nice bandname.  ;)

here's a clip of some ring modulator weirdness ( starts around the 1:33 point )

hey fuzzzzz is that thing still as loud?

I tried to add a volume pot to the original design, but it did not work out too well. While it did attenuate the volume it also took away some of the crazyness of the pedal. any tips to prevent that? Maybe add a resistor to lug1?

FUZZZZzzzz

yeah.. its way louder than the bypass signal.. if you add a pot, you add a resistor.. ::) so you might expect a difference in sound..
i actually have to look into adding a pot......... anyone??

btw.. thanks for the ringmod extravanganza!.. i will listen tonight

Nice work FUZZZZzzzz and thanks for it and, of course, many thanks to Tim Escobedo!
What kind of 567 have you used: regular or CMOS?
Can you record a soundclip on bass, too?

I've used these ones..

It's a regular one, thank you :)

currently in the midst of building this version - with volume control, which appears to be based on your circuit.

How exactly would you wire it to a 3PDT (True bypass) with LED

cheers for your help ;)

FUZZZZzzzz!

hi there - cheers for that

how did you wire yours?  :)

FUZZZZzzzz

probably the same way.. to be honest.. i dont like offboard wiring.. but this image is very easy to follow imo and never seem to let me down.
maybe try to wire your pedal first without any switch.. to make sure that it works. just input and output jack to the board (and ground obviously) and 9 v battery clip to pos and neg

Hey everyone,

New to the site...  hi  :)

I have built a Thing Modulator and am trying to get the 3PDT pedal switch setup.  Everything is working like it should, pedal switches, LEDs come on...  BUT I can hear the high pitch whine of the ring modulator when I am in bypass mode.  I have tried every wiring possibility for the switch, all have the same whine.  I also swapped out the IC, still has the high pitch whine when in bypass mode.  I have also moved around some ground wires, thinking the only place it could be leaking in is with the RING /SLEEVE to 3PDT activation point...  still no luck :-/

I am going to swap out the 3PDT, even though it is brand new... if that doesn't work I am seriously out of guesses.  ANY HELP AT ALL YOU GUYS CAN GIVE WOULD BE AMAZING!

btw .. I love this site!  It was about time I made an account...

thanks in advance

Try grounding the input or ouput or both when the effect is switched off.

hi

567 has an on board oscillator that whines.

a few folk have dealt with it a little but not completely. try a big cap across your power supply and a cap across the 567 + and - inputs. don't think you'll ever be rid of it though. good luck.

*edit* ^ that helps.

I tried grounding the input earlier today, no luck :-/  Maybe I will try grounding both, how would I ground both only when the effect is active?  And I should ground to the 3PDT ground like in the diagram, for both?

do you think the input / output ground would help? (like above)      Any suggestion on what kind of cap should I use? and when you say "across" how do you mean?

thanks a lot for trying to help guys...   been trying to get rid of this whine for HOURS now, man do I have a headache.  lol
