I know this has already been discussed a thousand times, but what do you guys think of the opamp version of the big muff campared to the transistor ones?

I like it a lot, built one up on perf and think it's a definite keeper.  Little tighter distortion than a typical transistor version, but with the typical BM tone stack.

It's my favorite of all the muffs, which are all pretty great in my opinion. The tone is a bit tighter and has a more mid-aggressive distortion tone. I would also say that it is more "brown" sounding than other muffs.... kind of like how a good Marshall JCM800 sounds. Kind of.

Other muffs I like for their wooliness and creaminess. This one I like for a crunchy distortion.

I haven't built one or played one, but the tone on the Smashing Pumpkins album Siamese dream is often pointed out as one of the best big muff tones.

I read that Billy Corgan used an opamp muff for that album.

Ugh never thought I'd be interested in the op amp version, but I think I'll give it a try.

Yep, I agree.
Less "creamy" than the discrete version but much more open and responsive.
Make the 150pf cap larger and you'll lose some fizz which can be good with this one.

Just a little something I've been working on recently...

Apart from the addition of the tone bypass circuit (which originally was wired christmas tree style on the trace side of the board), LED resistor, and a BS250 MOSFET for reverse polarity protection this should be as close as possible to the original.

With some Eagle project files here: http://cabbages.orconhosting.net.nz/graphics/joes_rubbish/fx/BMP/OABMP.zip.

I haven't built this yet, so it's very much unverified!
