Rat Clone Processes CD Audio - Fails W/Amp

after building a audio probe i found that my rat clone (tone pad) will properly distort an audio signal from a CD or MD player according to the functions of the box (vol - tone - distortion) bypass works. when i plug it into an amp - i get nothing. actually i did get some cracks and pops. used a fender twin tube amp with stratocaster. i have pulled it apart once. no dice. any ideas?
