Well, I found an old mr. crybaby super volume wah pedal at my house, gutted all of the circuitry out of it, and had the most interesting idea. What if I put a distortion pedal circuit board inside of the pedal case. I was thinking putting like an mxr distortion+ clone inside there, putting it's output pot where the volume pot went on the original pedal, and controlling the distortion knob with the wah pedal. Before I go any deeper into making this, what are your thoughts about this?

Sounds like you should do it. If it appeals to you, and you think it would be useful for you, why should you need to ask us  :icon_biggrin:

Yep.

Try it.  What's the worst that could happen?

The Wah sweep could also be used to control a re-housed Delay, Tremolo, Phaser - there are *many* uses for this pedal shell.

In fact, the shell is arguably the most difficult part to get working - and you already got one...  :icon_wink:

Go for it!
Happiness is a warm etchant bath.

empty wah cases are getting hard to come by....id go with the delay option/ level/feedback/..........thatd be good...

have fun... :icon_mrgreen:

Back before the world wide web (it wasn't that long ago) I made the rounds of the music repair shops in Austin and came up with a dozen dead wahs for a total cost of $10. Many of them were free.

That's an interesting comment on how very many people are now learning what an electron is, learning to make effects, getting something to work, then opening a web site where they sell their "hand made point to point carbon comp" pedals and speak of themselves in the plural.  :icon_lol:

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Yeah, don't mention the thing that everyone is selling everything online. Like every single crap from your house is now being sold.
I loved those days when you could get something, somewhere for free lik an old radio. At least here in The Netherlands, even the worst broken crap radio is being sold as defect but whatever.. and the seller is askign for money. CRAP!

Maybe a future-minded way to look at the wah pedal shell would be to make a wiring harness that contains connections to the wah pot, volume pot, input & output signal connections and power supply connections.  On each kind of effect you build, you design with a mating harness.

Then when you get bored with the Dist+, you take off a few screws holding the circuitboard, disconnect the harness, and slip in the next fun effect you just finished building :).  If the circuit board fastener is designed to also release quickly, then it is conceivable you could change circuit boards on the fly between songs at a gig.

I designed something like that a while ago...

I ran into trouble, and had to redesign some aspects. Took a long time to get back to it but I finally did and am nearly complete with my revision.

Basically there is a board with the jack/footswitch/status LED/power connections and regulators for 5v (for digital things) and Vref (if needed) that is permanently fixed in the enclosure. An 8 pin header connects the effect to the fixed board, carrying: INPUT, OUTPUT, GND, Vref, +9V, N/A, TAPIN, +5V.
