Time for another slice of BMP

Seeing as how we're well into the summer of 2010, I felt it was my moral duty to build another Big Muff Pi !  :icon_mrgreen:

This spring, I put together a build using 2N3904's and LEDs off of this schematic:

http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/pdf/ggg_bmp_l70_sc.pdf

So, this time, I've got some 2N5088's and proper diodes .... when I'm done, I will be one step closer to my lifelong dream of chaining 1000 fuzz pedals in series !  :icon_razz: ( as opposed to connecting them in parallel ... which, of course, would be entirely unsatisfactory )

I'll provide updates as the Summer of Fuzz progresses ...

Preposterous! Series/parallel I could see, but SERIES? Really?

I will be debuting my Muff variant very soon.
9 months in the making, but well worth it,it has replaced my Dr Boogie as my favorite dirt pedal.
It has a stumbled upon mod I have never seen before, that works amazing.
I expect Mr Gagan, will be very excited when he sees and hears this one.
I am calling it either Gemini Muff,or more likely, Gemini Witch  :icon_twisted: as it has a dual personallity like all the Gemini women I dated in my younger years. :icon_wink:
I'm no EE or even a tech, just a monkey with a soldering iron that can read, and follow instructions. ;D

Summer of Fuzz snooze update  :)

I've decided to build the 22/7 from runoffgroove.com

http://www.runoffgroove.com/22-7.html

I took a listen to the soundclips and liked what i heard.  And I've got some spare CD4049's.  ( I'll keep the 2N5088's for later ) .... i notice that ROG recommends shielded cable for input/output wiring .... don't ya just love shielded wiring?  :icon_mrgreen:

stringsthings

i'm making one small adjustment to the schematic ... tying the unused inverter inputs to +V instead of ground ...

stringsthings

the layout is sized to fit the small board from Futurlec .... i left extra room for modifications

i'm very happy with this pedal ... there are many tones available with the Scoop/Classic/Flat switch .... soundclip to follow soon ...

the Summer of Fuzz marches on  :icon_mrgreen:

Hides-His-Eyes

I like the look of that 22/7, I might try that one out.

Some people were having noise issues.
Hows yours in that arena ?

Sounds great!  I'm very happy that you're enjoying the circuit.  Thanks for sharing the photos, clip, and build report.

This was supposed to be the summer of fuzz! This was supposed to be the summer of fuzz!

Nice raw fuzz sound there.  :icon_wink:

IMO, the noise performance is pretty good .... subjective assessment ... YMMV ....

WARNING ... we're now officially in the dog-days of fuzz  :icon_mrgreen: ... it's so hot that Johnny Carson forgot Ed's last name !  :icon_biggrin:

Ed: how hot is it, Johnny?
Johnny Carson:  ( who is this guy? )

and deep in the depths of the silly DIY lair, another slice of Big Muff Pie was cooking .... the IC version ... the schematic is copied from this 1978 version:

http://analogguru.an.ohost.de/193/schematics/EH_BigMuffPi_OP-78.gif

for your eyes only:

upon (successful) completion, i'll provide a veroboard layout and a soundclip ... upon unsuccessful completion, i'll provide appropriate swear words  :icon_mrgreen:

Hi,
there's an already finished (and verified) layout of the OpAmp Muff around. I think MikeL at the other forum did it. :)
Sounds nice btw.

Cheers,
dune2k

stringsthings

discovered an error on the schematic  :-[ .... updated version here:  :)

Mmm, nice. I think I'll base my next fuzz/dist box on the scheme you updated. By the way, what diodes do you recommend? Perhaps add a switch to toggle between different sets of diode-sixpacks?

diode switching would indeed be worth experimenting with .... LEDs, Germanium, # of diodes, feedback resistor value ....

i would recommend starting with 1N1418's .... easy to find and low cost .... since the BMP is such a classic fuzz/dist, there's a good chance that i'll experiment with part substitutions in future builds .... for this build, i'm using a higher quality socket for IC2 ( 741 ) so i can experiment with different chips in that position ...
