Mesa Dual Rectifier in a pedal.....

Hello,

I've got a Roland 80X (great amp by the way) one the CMOS settings is the R-Fier stack which is said to be based on the "Mesa-Boogie® Dual Rectifier" with super high gain! I love this model, for screaming solo's it's the sound I want to get in a pedal!

My main rig is a Fender Blues Junior with various DIY pedals, big muff & mighty mouse, neither of these get close.

I've had search around here for a pedal that might capturethe sound I'm after. The Dr. Boogie or ROG's Uno look like they might fit the bill?
Welcome and suggestions, help, perf layouts etc.

Many thanks

Matt

There are PCB's available to either make yourself or have someone else make. Having built one, I don't recommend perfing, but if you're a perf robot master like Rick then go for it!

It's a cool pedal, not my kinda thing.

The Dr. Boogie seems to be pretty popular. Give it a shot. I'm preparing a Thor from ROG right now. They're kind of similar in sound, but the Thor is supposed to be a Marshall Super Lead. Seems to have a little more bottom end (or so I've heard), and I don't need the higher Boogie gain.

But what I wanted to say is that either seems like it could work, and I don't think perfboard is going to hold you back, if you're patient and plan accordingly. Tons of material is available from previous Boogie builders, just do a search for it.

Here's a thread giving tips and making comparisons between different pedals like and including the two you've mentioned:

Good luck!

I would recommend doing the Dr Boogey from here.
http://gaussmarkov.net/wordpress/

It can be a noisy circuit and the PCB and schematic  from above have  been worked on by many forum members.

If you dont want to make your own PCB
Check out madbeanpedals.com or check on the forum Im sure someone will sell you one.

Also check out the BSIABII.

Thanks for all the replies.

I've ordered a Dr. Boogey PCB from John Lyons.

I'm looking forward to getting it built, from what I've been reading it looks like it should nail the sound I'm after.

The only thing that's is concerning is the references to it being a "noisy circuit", but I'll have to cross that bridge when I come to it.

Many thanks

If you use Johns PCB and follow the wiring tips for high gain pedals on this forum you will be fine.

Also check out Johns website.
He details how to use shielded wire.

Star grounding and shielding on the output is always a plus. Also spend some time fine tuning those trims. I've got one and love it for the high gain. Works great when I need high gain nastiness through a bassman.

I'd recommend searching on YouTube too when a DIY project seems interesting. It's become increasingly popular for people to demo their builds there.

Just had a look at your Utube clip deadastronaut, that is definitely the sound I want, great playing by the way.  Did you build it on the gaussmarkov pcb layout? did you make and mods?

Nice to see so many people in the UK on the forum.

Thanks for the all replies.

cheers matt..yep it was built on the gaussmarkov version...ive tried other versions but i'd go with this one...

i didnt do any mods..but i have built a larger pcb  board to experiment with tone wise......the tone stack could be better 'tuned'

in my opinion, it lacks a bit of bass when not amped..but hey..put it through an amp and it kicks..these are designed for amps..imo..

there is plenty in the threads about mods etc...

i was fed up with hearing these great pedals through webcam mic's..they didnt do em justice at all...so i made a proper vid...

great to see another uk diy'er....any questions just ask man...........all the best of british to ya.. :icon_mrgreen:

cheers rob.

tip for diyers' put ya country of origin in ya signature..makes it easier to advise on where to buy stuff..and to trade etc......
