Hopefully the right tack to get us back on track (although I really adore the hockey horses - thanks for that).

A King of Tone with a 9V/18V charge pumped switch and RG's great and simple polarity protection circuit. Layout and schematic unfortunately gone in my recent hard drive crash.

Some good advice that didn't vanish with my last digital year: Do not use clear nail polish to cover up your enclosure-to-be-etched if you don't dig that rotten look. I bought black nail polish especially for that purpose (although I could swear the cashier wouldn't have believed that for a second judging by his look) that I misplaced that day... So I used a clear one I found in the bathroom (don't tell) but as it is clear you'll never know where you've applied it and where you'd still have to.

Anyway, here  it is.

Nice. I'm growing to like this grungy look. I'm wondering about using anodising to prepare such a surface and hand colour/ spray the surface with rusty shades to make it look really nackered....

I guess this settles the question of being able to get fine lines to turn out well. Superb job, love it!

Really well executed! What do you use to transfer?

Thanks! :) I use Polaroid photo paper, there's a link in my etching guide to the exact type if you're interested?

First etch.  I'd say it turned out so-so.  The paint isn't nearly as dark as what I've seen on here from others.  I just did one spray and waited about 4 hours until I sanded... unevenly, I guess because the top lost a bit too much paint.  I ended up realizing i'd get better results not using a sanding block for the paint removal.

The etch could have been cleaner... I kind of have to rush through these projects, because I can't stand for more than about 5 minutes due to fractures in my spine, so I didn't do a very good prep job.

I'd say that's pretty damn good for a first go man, don't be too hard on yourself!

Looks to me like you could've done with a longer etch time if possible to get it a bit deeper, that would help with the sanding stage and using a flat block as the top layer of paint would be more easily removed.

Also I'd definitely recommend a couple of light coats of paint then waiting for it to cure overnight, if you sand too soon it lifts much more easily when sanding.

Finally, if you find the paint has dulled after sanding a couple of layers of clear coat will bring it right back and also improve the contrast.

Give it a go next time and see if that helps at all, as I say for a first etch what you've got there is really good!

Cheers,
Graham

believe me thats really cool for a first etch.., nice...you shouldve seen my first one ...maybe not  :)

i use matt black , itscdry in 30 minutes and can be sanded with soapy warm water...im not a fan of gloss
black...nasty,  and when its sanded you may as well have used matt anyway...

just my 2p... :icon_wink:
