Etched enclosures

You can just stick on the vinyl and etch away (see my post earlier this page) but your suggestion of using the vinyl as a mask for painting, then etching gives me ideas. Thinking of multiple masks/etches....

@ Stallik, thanks for your reply, I guess I'll stick with just the ninyl then, seems like less of a hassle. Now the hardest part, creating more designs and picking the best one...

Nice that the spraypaint vinyl stencil thing gave you some ideas. I wanted to use spraypaint because I read it would make a robuster mask than toner, the vinyl just seemed like a good idea to have a stencil that actually stays in place properly...

You're welcome @tillinghast. If you are stuck for design ideas take a look at deadastronuat's work on this and the previous page. His Batman design is simple, elegant & effective. Nicest looking box I've seen in a long time. Shows what can be done by not over complicating things

@tillinghast : as stallick says, try a basic design first,  even just do a practice (design) on the base plate, and see how that comes out before trying the top...

its all in the preparation when etching.  any questions just ask ok,  theres plenty of people who do great etches on here!!

I love thrall blue inside, have been trying to get all blue caps, where are you getting yours, I keep getting sent the odd red one.

Made a quick mock-up with some cut out vinyl and a sharpie. Now I'm in doubt about the design, I like it, but something doesn't quite sit right to me, considering making a more "standard" design for it... Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks for the kind words guys. The way to do the black and blue is to etch as usual, paint black and sand clean. Then I painted over everything with Tamiya clear blue paint. The tamiya paint is really nice, it takes to sanding very well and seems durable. Only time will tell......

Here's a PT2399 delay I did last weekend. Next time I'm gonna do the sky in light blue. Below are some fuzz boxes I did.

This was my first etch, and I'm hooked. Many thanks to Slade for his great tutorial. Overall it went pretty well, especially since I tried a reverse etch first. My only problem was that I tried to use the HP premium photo paper sitting unused on my shelf, rather than buying dollar store photo paper. Man, was that a bad idea. Or maybe the iron was too hot. I don't know. When I ironed it, a layer of the HP photo paper melted onto the enclosure and the paper separated when I tried to peel it off. I had to spend 20 minutes soaking it in warm water and carefully rubbing to get the mess off. It screwed up the toner a little, but not catastrophically. Anyway, next time... cheap photo paper and lower iron temp.

It's a Hearthrob Tremolo with a white LED wired to flash at the trem rate.

BTW, could I get away with not using primer next time? Would I just have to find the right kind of paint? You can see the primer showing through a bit in the pics, which is interesting, but not necessarily a better look than straight green against bare metal, you know?
