I think what they're saying is that Inkscape messes up when saving to bitmap (excessive jaggedness) but not when saving to pdf. The wonderful world of Inkscape ::) Don't get me wrong, I love it, but it's far from perfect.

It doesn't do this for me other than what would be expected for bitmap vs. vector.

i tried exporting from inkscape to pdf, seems to have sorted it....strange. ???....but happy. :)

I'm not an Inkscape expert (I use Illustrator) but I believe that the vector information is preserved with the PDF info, which would explain why it works better than the raster formats.

cool...^

i was looking at adobe illustrator earlier....hmmm...

For those not versed with this, a clarification. 2 way to create an image file
1. Vector: pure mathematics. These describe everything about the size, shape, position, colour etc of each element of the image. Advantages are that each element is truly scalable and resolution is irelevant. Vectors files are tiny. Disadvantages are that no matter how good the mathematics, the final image will always look somewhat less than real life- more of a cartoon. Fonts are always created as vectors.

2. Bitmap: this is a grid of squares called pixels. Each pixel has a specification for colour, density and hue. The entire pixel is a flat even colour with no detail. Quantity of pixels per inch  (PPI) is the resolution but its normally described as dots per inch (DPI) no matter how big the grid of pixels, the image is always made up those little squares so if you enlarge the image, you will eventually see them as jagged curves etc. Advantages are the amazing image quality, disadvantages are the lack of scalability and the can be enormous.

File types: there are specific bitmap only file types- tiff, targa, jpeg etc. Vector can be ai, cdr etc but there are 3  file types that can contain both bitmap AND vector elements. postscript (ps), encapsulated postscript (eps) and PDF. The fact that you are saving something as a PDF does not automatically mean that it will remain a vector. Check your pdf settings when saving the file

If you save a vector element in a bitmap format, it will be converted into a bitmap and there is no easy way to convert it back! Once your nice, mathematically scaleable vector object, including fonts, becomes a bitmap, it will show jagged edges if you enlarge it, and this will happen no matter which software you are using.

This is only the briefest of explanations but I hope it clearly shows that you cannot necessarily blame the graphics package for screwing up your images.

This is a build of Jon P's Clipper Ship, but with a BoneRay tone stack. I ended up switching the volume pot to 1M to stay in line with the tone stack scale and then adding an output buffer. I love the extra flexibility the Tilt and Mid controls provide... totally worth the messy hack I did on the board. :D

The etch was kind of too shallow. I had to get creative and do a lot of color mixing with the airbrush, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out overall---it ended up looking textured and antiqued.

The jewel really is that crazy aqua color. It's an old amp jewel I picked up at a hamfest.

Yeah, between the etch and the paint job, it looks instantly vintage!
That etch sure looks great to me.
I don't know about you, but it seems like when I try to etch really deep, my deeper etches don't seem to have the sharpness at the edges that the shallower ones do...

nice one maik! making me dizzy, but nice! :P

@ thelonious, love that etch, color, jewel light, knobs and how it all comes together perfectly. That's something I would want on my pedalboard.

Jip, all etch!
And yes, makes me dizzy too. :icon_mrgreen:
Labyrinth was too small in photoshop, only 1px. 2-3px would be better, not so dizzy

Wow.  How in the heck will you etch semi-tone grey?  Wizardry, I tell you.  Wizardry.

No it´s no semitone. It´s black/white.

Ah, now I see...bad pic. The real one is black-white
this one is better

I'm impressed you're even trying to etch that! On a side note, that picture somewhat reminds me of 2 paintings I made few years ago;
