Really nice etching there Cinder!

I think NaOH is gaining ground.

Indeed but is there a resist other than laser toner? Tried to find one but only got references for industrial masks unavailable to DIYers.

mfunky

Same question here. I heard glue would work, but haven't tried yet...

Some time ago I posted a photosensitive film method. It works well. The only hitch is it doesn't work with NaOH.  That would strip it off the box. I use ferric cholride and cupric chloride with it.

Pettol

I have used humbrol enamel for touch ups. It seems to resist NaOH. I baked in the oven to harden it, if I remember correctly.

Cinder

Cyanoacrylate (superglue) works as a touch-up as well. I want to try the enamel paint though as superglue is impossible to paint with if you need to correct a shape or something.

StewMac has brush on cyano, suppose to be slow curing so you can work it with the brush. I'm sure shipping to Sweden would be quite nasty.

Pettol

I've tried super glue but it didn't work. It was more of a panic thing though, so maybe I should give it another try. Normal glue seems tricky - at first it's flows uncontrollably and then,  too soon, it has cured.

The stewmac product might work, but yes, the shipping costs are ridiculous.

Great job on the etching and especially for your first ones Cinder, NaOH is the way forward man! I used it on Pettol's recommendation and have never looked back since! :)

Cinder

A quick question to you etchers - when you fill in the etching with paint or whatever you use, do you go for filling up the etched grooves entirely so you get a flat surface with metal and paint on the same level, or do you just paint a little bit so you get the etching to remain deep enough to feel it with your fingers?

I haven't quite decided what's best yet.. I feel that its cool to be able to feel the artwork (part of why you do etching?), but at the same time its really nice to cover up pores and other small irregularities that the etched surfaces have, and the paint surface becomes really nice and uniform when you sand it flat.

Stay tuned for some more pictures, I got 3 pedals coming up!

mfunky

I am not patient enough during the etching, so mine always come out with the paint flush to the metal

Zilla

my first kick at the can using ferric chloride. The dark and faded black areas are because of the reflections in the clear coat.

Cinder

Looking good Zilla, chaotic and grungy.

Cozybuilder

Zilla- I can't wait to see your tenth kick!

Tethinhas

Hello guys! Greetings from Brazil!

First time posting in this topic; Here's my last project, and the first one with an etched enclosure: the Song of Time Delay!

I used photosensitive ink and ferric chloride, what do you guys think?  :icon_mrgreen:

Tethinhas - hello and welcome to the forum. your etch looks great, and you get extra points for doing all the sides (but your pictures could be a little smaller).

Very nice etch all round, the theme looks kinda tribalish in parts are those Brazilian tribal symbols? and Duck_arse is right you've sure got massive hands  :icon_biggrin:

nice design man...cool... 8)

tip, before etching, hold your prepared box under a light and you may see
tiny silver dots where the toner missed...dab a little nail varnish on those....
itll come out perfect then...no dots. ..just my 2p..
