Big Daddy - Can Decay Fizz/Gating Be Fixed?

Built it up stock, socketed the FET (5458 hardly worked, 5457 is the way to go), the chip and the input cap, which I raised slightly from 0068 to 01.  Sounds great until you let a chord or note decay, goes into fizz on chords and almost a gated fuzz sound on single notes up above 12th fret.  Biasing issue?  Is the 15K too hot maybe?  I like this enough to put some more time in it tuning, but am not sure where to start.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Part of the "fizz" in almost any distortion device comes about because there will be a portion of the note's lifespan, during the decay phase, where it will fluctuate above and below the point where clipping occurs.  I would think that this is more likely to happen with strummed chords because the fluctuating peaks of all the strings are more likely to sometimes sum above, and sometimes sum below, the clipping threshold.

In some respects, the greatest likelihood of having a "fizz-free" sound is if the clipping threshold is set high enough that clipping only occurs during the initial transient peak, after which there isn't a snowball's chance in Mumbai that the remaining portion of the signal could even approach the clipping threshold.

hi mark. im having the same problem on a project im working on..im using 2 j201 stages..into a 386...i get a nice marshally type hi gain..

bit more than the big daddy etc..

but fizzes on the dying note...how can i set the clipping threshold hi..to avoid this!..fizzzzzzzz ..

I have the same issue with the Big Daddy. It will fizzle out at the end of a sustained note.

I put the biasing on a 50K pot and never did get a satisfactory result that way....I'm sure there must be other ways to approach this, but in the end I scrapped the project.  Still keeping my eyes open for a 386 based distortion.

ive tried quite a few 386 based projects  but they all seem to have this inherent problem..!..

am working on one using 2 j201's and a 386...can get rid of fizz at lower gains..but whats the point of that!..

i have resorted to going with a totally different project for now...i posted it earlier..the 'bogner ecstasy'..schematic pdf uploaded.

ive heard it and it sounds nice..using the classic j201's.

p.s dont bother with the krank distortus max..it has problems too..all versions....been there done that etc...

A 386 distortion pedal I like is the Purple Plexi.
