To get lower frequency pump, the volume of the drums must be large, this makes the volume of the drums large [loud and big].
There's got to be a better solution:
Enclosure w/speakers air pumped in from another chamber [drum].
  Water tub with a pickup.
Both of these work 'ok' and tend to cause feedback, not sure why since I taped heavy magazines over the speaker front...still working on this.
A little reverb or other effect would probably make it even bigger, sounds aweful drum-like as it is, <half the size of my bass drum..and has a volume control on it.
Not that my bass drum isn't sort of rattly.
The idea is boiled down to these goals:
A volume control can be used with it.
  Smaller than a bass drum.
Could be anything, even a 'drum circuit' with accessories.
  All suggestions welcome.

Hey, Pete

Forest mims had, in one of his books, a circuit much like RG's guitar string sound circuit. It was a drum circuit. Tunable I believe! Bet you could get just about any drum sound out of it. Even a snair if you added some white noise to it! Bass drum might be the easiest to achieve actually. Anyway, look it up and see if you can use it. If so, you could trigger the circuit with a piezo below a pad conected to a 4066. Then to an amp, with of course, a volume control.

Back in 1981 or so, Craig Andertoin had a fairly simple design called the "Hip Bass Drum", that he published in POLYPHONY.  Thomas Henry reviewed it and liked it a lot.  Many of the elements of that design were incorporated into a a number of the drum circuits he designed in the subsequent years.  You can find a scan of the article and accompanying layout here:  http://electro-music.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=28447
