Hi all,

I just bought a drill press and am very eager to use it.  I've ordered some components to build 2 tremulus lunes, but they are coming from overseas (i live in australia) and apparently wont be here for 3 weeks.

I'm looking for an in between project.  Something smallish.  Just looking for some ideas.  To give you an idea of what i like, and what ive already built, ill list what ive got in the order that i like them (roughly). Top is 'most liked'

Dr Boogie
small clone & small stone
lovepedal enternity & ts808
rebote delay 2.5 & orange squeezer
big muff & rat
mxr bluebox & greenringer
mxr dist+ & npn booster

I like high gain, and effects like phaser, delay and chorus.  Maybe an EQ pedal? (althought i have an boss eq8).  I also have a timeline which is just such a good delay, almost makes it not worth going down that path either...
So whats left? Ross compressor maybe? I think i have the parts for that. Are there any other 'dr boogie-ish' high gain sort of pedals out there?  Really impressed with it.
It's not so much a matter of what i need, this is a hobbie of mine. just for fun you know...
Oh yeah, if a pcb layout is available (to be etched) that would be very good.
Thanks for any info & suggestions!

I agree, EQ or Compressor would be my vote, as it seems to be what's missing from your list.

The Ross compressor and the MXR Dynacomp are very similar and either can be built on the same board.
Tonepad has a PCB Layout and Fuzzcentral has some mod ideas.

For EQ, GGG has a 5-band equalizer and RunoffGroove has the venerable Mr. EQ.

Tremulus lune (tremolo) is a fun pedal - build it with all the extra controls and you'll love it, even if you're not a fan of tremolos like I wasn't.

Where in Aus are you?

There's a HUGE number of gain pedals available over at madbeanpedals.com. A lot of his projects have images you can etch.

I looked at your list and didn't see any fuzz pedals. I would recommend something like a rangemaster, a tonebender or fuzz face, and or an octavia. If you like high gain and funky effects those things would do you some crazy sound.

Hey thanks all for the info!

Im going to do some research into everyones suggestions.  This is great, you've all given me some good idea for future builds!  Why stop at one, ey? :)

I forgot to say, i really like tremolo (looking forward to building the tremulus with sym mod!!).  I'm not really into fuzz jacob but as you said, i dont really have one in the list either.  I'll research your suggestions, see which one i fancy, thanks!

If you use a valve amp then may I pimp my own booster pedal.

If it's not a valve amp though, don't bother, it might fry an SS amp!

I'd build a EF440 from GGG.  This pedal is insane and there is a mod out there for a "linger" effect which I really like.  Another of my favorite is the Thing Modulator.  Sweet!

Please, make the ideas stop. Just for a few minutes. Just a little while. Please.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

No, please keep going!  These are some great ideas here!

Merlinb, i use an original fender twin.  What does the glass blower do? Cant seem to find anything on that one...

Solarplexus, Like the EF440!  Sounds great! Another one for the list.

boogietube, tonemender looks like an easy project too...

Oh hang on...maybe you guys should stop...  :(

There's no escaping this hobby once you get into it is there...My wife said 'its me or the pedals'.  I said '...but my pedals give me so much enjoyment'.  So now i have a WHOLE ROOM for pedals to build...  :icon_neutral: (jk)

It is a pure clean buffer/booster pedal, but it doubles the output swing you usually get from a 9V battery. With ordinary opamps the Glass Blower will deliver up to 12Vp-p output, and with a rail-to-rail opamp you can get 16Vp-p, which is about three times more slam than any weedy TubeScreamer will give you! Just don't plug it into any solid-state circuits without caution...

+1,000!

I've built three pedals from his site and they're great. Nice layouts!

What should be next for me? I've already built the following:

Madbean's Zombii (Fuzz Factory)
Madbean's Chunk Chunk (Dr. Boogie)
Madbean's Box of Metal
SHO
BSIABII
Rebote 2.5
Tremulus Lune
Firefly amp
AMZ 3-way splitter/buffer
Sansamp GT-2 (in the works)

I'm thinking a chorus, flanger, different fuzz (I have more AC128s), or some type of noise maker.

jkokura

Tonepad has some nice boards - look at the FL301 Flanger and Phase 45. Also, the Madbean CE-2 is a great option for chorus I think. I've also built the Tonepad Small Clone and it's pretty great.

For fuzz I wanna build a Tone bender clone (madbean?). I also wanna build a rangemaster too.

I also would highly, highly recommend Taylor (forum members) boards for the Echo Base and the Tap Tempo Tremolo. Those are must builds in my opinion, especially the Echo Base. I used to wonder why everyone raved about that thing - but now I know. Build it.

You say you like high gain and effectual circuits.... how bout a pedal with one of each?  I'd build something with a Tube Screamer and a Rebote 2.5.  If you have another TS (cause who on this forum doesn't...  :icon_rolleyes:) in your arsenal that you can put in front then you're just size 13 heavy gauge strings away from some sweet Stevie Ray Vaughn tone.   :icon_lol:
Builds Completed: Big Muff. Fuzz Face. Tube Screamer. Rat. Crash Sync. Harmonic Jerkulator. 6-band EQ. Rebote 2.5. Tremulus Lune. Small Stone. Small Clone. Microamp. LPB-2. Green Ringer. Red Ranger. Orange Squeezer. SansAmp. MXR Headphone Amp. Bass Fuzz.

I'd block diagram something with multiple outputs, A/B channel switching or balance...anything else that would side chain A/B channel type effects.
Then figure out which side needs what [splitting the effects into two separate sections tends to help with this].
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

Has anyone tried the 'insanity box'?  How would it compare to say the Dr Boogie, being the only other diy very high gain pedal i've built so far...Dr boogie is the sort thing I personally like in the high gain arena. Or anything else thats similar?  Even the box of metal sounds a bit, old school for my liking. (from what i can tell from youtube clips etc).

I just finished a Dr. Boogie, and while it's gotten me much closer to where I want to be I'm still searching. I'm on a quest for that Pantera Far Beyond Driven sound. Grady Champion himself has explained Dimebag's fairly simple setup, but I wish I could roll it all into one box. I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy a Randall RG100 and find an old MXR Flanger/Doubler.
