hey i ordered some ic's from mouser. they sent me the miniture size. i guess thats what it is. its too small to put on my pc board. how can you tell the dif between the diff sizes. i want to mod my ts 9 and i dont want to get the wrong size.

anchovie

You'll generally need ICs in a DIP package type. If Mouser doesn't specify the package on their page, look in the datasheet for the IC and the "Ordering Information" section should explain what letters in the product code identify the package.

Maybe he got surface-mount IC's?.

Exactly, DIL is I think similar to DIP. This has happenen to me too in the past. Some people etch SMD boards (no drilling :)) and use solder past. That makes it look easier though. For now I've kept to DIP size.

thanks for the reply. i talked to cust service and the guy told me the next size up was a 24 pin. i guess i asked the wrong ?

clamup1

hey are DIP8 and PDIP the size we use ?

tiges_ tendres

How about you tell us what you were trying to order, and then we'll tell you where to get it!

I'm guessing you wanted a 4558 or a TL072?

Try a little tenderness.

Cardboard Tube Samurai

Sounds like you've accidentally ordered Surface Mount (SM) parts

Taylor

DIP8 = dual inline package with 8 pins
DIL8 = dual inline package with 8 pins (same as above, different acronym)
PDIP = plastic dual inline package

The above is what you want.

Stuff you don't want (you can find the meaning of these acronyms with a quick Google):

SOIC
PLCC
QFP
PGA
BGA

Mouser has a handy filter option when searching ICs to select the package. Always choose DIP, DIL or PDIP if you don't want surface mount.

Didn't I already say that?.

It's not about the number of pins, it's about the type of package.

Hi--

Please check out my Stock List.

http://www.smallbearelec.com/StoreFront.bok

The Mouser catalog is a marvelous resource, once you know enough basics to sort through several hundred thousand offerings for the few hundred of interest to FX DIYers. My store is far smaller, but specialized, and we offer the knowledgeable help with shopping that Mouser's (very good!) service people mostly can't. Our pricing for staple parts is usually competitive, and we offer numerous specialty and made-to-order items that help with producing professional results in home shop.

Regards
Steve Daniels

That was no spam! ;) 80% of my FX stuff was ordered from Steve's shop ;D
Actually, I will be ordering more soon.

thanks again for the replies. i got it figured out. yeah i needed the 4558. i ordered some 741's only they were really small. wouldnt fit on a perfboard. by the way anyone need some surface mount 741's.

jasperoosthoek

I'm not a big fan of the normal 741s, let alone the surface mount 741s. :D

Be sure to order your 4558s from small bears shop if you want to build a tube screamer. (Or any other circuit with clipping diodes in the feedback path). When I ordered mine (conrad.nl) I got RC4558s. Although some people have great success with those RC chips my TS sounded like crap. I found a real JRC at my local electronics shop. They allowed me to check all the chips in their box and had no problem that I bought 10 JRC4558s. :icon_mrgreen: This dramatically changed my TS from a crappy sounding box to a lovely sounding box!

i hope my pedal dosent sound like crap. i ordered from mouser. im gonna put a socket in so i can change the ic if i want to.

jasperoosthoek

I always use sockets for ICs. The only downside of sockets is a tiny little price tag. ;)

The 741 was one of the first opamps, and doesn't have as good specs as the modern ones, but it seems it is essential in getting the vintage sound out of certain old effects, like the DOD 250 OD and the MXR Distortion+.  The evidence of that is the reissue of the DOD 250, where they used half of a 4558 instead of the 741, and it just doesn't sound the same.
