hey ran into a prob. took out the ic and put in a socket. put in a 4558 and when you turn up all the knobs you get a low growl sound. other than the growl there is no distortion. i dont know what i did but i screwed it up good. any help would be helpful

the musicianshotline says to change out the 1 uf np to 1 uf. which way will the new caps go in + side to the chip or other way around.

I'm not really sure what you are asking. Try reading the debugging thread stickied at the top of this page and post in that format to get some help.
