Boss CE-2 BBD problems

I built the "coveted" BOSS CE-2 Chorus pedal from Francisco's layout on Tonepad. For about a week, this pedal sounded fantastic. Nice subtle chorus effect. However, after about a week, the pedal would not chorus anymore. After searching the net and forums, I found that some people were able to get it to snap back to life by actually REMOVING pin 8 of the MN3101 from the socket/board and cutting it off! Being skeptical, I never thought it would work but being desperate, I tried it and low and behold it started WORKING!

Can someone please explain the reasoning behind this?

I sourced them from an IC distributor.
