I'm gonna make my own guitar cables, and saw a video:

I've been looking online and am understanding that balanced cables are better for longer cable length, why then, does everyone seem to use unbalanced cable for 1/4 " guitar cabling? is this because guitar outputs are unbalanced, and amp inputs are unbalanced as well?

Thanks alot!

You got it right!!!!

I'm sure that you could do a DIY version of the Radial SGI if you like http://www.radialeng.com/re-sgi.htm It's basically an active DI and a reverse active DI so you can run long runs with a mic cable.

But, to be honest, you don't really need it in normal playing situations and by using proper buffering and impedance matching with decent cables you should be cool.  Of course, there are people here that know much more about this.  RG's site is really helpful for this kind of stuff http://www.geofex.com/

Why did 2.1mm 9VDC with centre negative tip become popular/standard? Why are jacks on the side of pedals instead of the top where it makes more sense when pedals are side by side? Why is the sky blue? Why does my wife go crazy once a month?

Some things are just mysteries...
