Boss CE-2 LFO issue/flaw?

So I just got a CE-2 a few weeks ago and don't play with it much on high gain settings

Tried that just now to discover a "chopper" noise similar to the introduction of "Apocalypse Now"
Is this normal, or should I crack it open to mess with the circuit?
