Remote switchbox for effect loop

So I'm building a loop for an overdrive pedal that can be switched remotely from my TC G-Major. That way I dont have to step on the actual overdrive to turn it on--I use a midi pedal to switch amp channels, and control this relay.

Simple, 1/4" in to a box 1/4" out and a  Relay that switches inline a 1/4" send and return, problem is that I've got voltage going to the chassis and I'm reading 9.6vdc across the 1/4" jack that makes the actual switching. A diode connected from one coil connection to the other stops all flow and will not allow the switch to ground from the power supply to turn the circuit off and on. (having the flow enter the Cathode end)

I am not a guru at pedal building so any help would be appreciated, the pic below shows the concept-I think it is from GEOFX
