Can anything that controls an LED be hooked up across from that LDR? LFO, guitar signal, expression pedal?

Why not?
LDR is a simple variable resistor.
You can connect its lugs whenever you need a... variable resistor...
"NOT FLAMMABLE" is not a challenge
