Forgive my noobness when it comes to this kind of stuff, i know roughly how things work but im real fuzzy on the details..  But i was thinking it might be fun to take roughly the ruby circut and graft a distortion+ type thing in front.. maybe use a tl072 for the ic so i can use the second half as the ruby's input buffer? would that work or would i still have to use the mpf102.

hopefully end up with a mini head.. kinda 80's sounding.. could probably leave pins 1 and 8 open (on the lm386) to let the dist+ do its work.. and maybe just use the dist+ controls to control volume and gain. great little campfire/busking amp for a little metalhead like me?

Anyway any suggestions or advice would be greatly apreciated.

ps. yes i know the 386 isnt capable of much metal chug.. but thats not the primary reason for this amp anyway

Sure you can do it - you only need a single opamp (ie the first stage is acting as a preamp & the buffer so no second stage needed)

The reason most don't go this way is becuase using jfet is considered more guitar /sonic friendly (then ironically then feeding it into an LM366, which is ermm ....ok, I digress).

Just remember to use the TL07x's  non inverting input, as this will yield a much higher input impedance (like in the order of seveal megaohms)

thanks for the reply gurner. i was thinking the tl072 just cause its the only dual opamp i know off hand (and i know tl071 is commonly used as a mod to the dist+).. i though use one half in place of the 741 in the dist+.. the other half for the ruby's input buffer.

basically your saying the dist+ circut would act as a buffer in itself?.. so basically (dist+ --> input cap --> input pin on 386) correct?

also which is the non-inverting input?.. "in-" or "in+"? or is that off base all together lol?

I only mentioned a TL071 as you don't need a dual opamp. That said, a dual opamp offers more flexibility, isn't that much bigger nor any more expensive, so probably better to go with that. You got the chain correct.

there are two non inverting inputs on a TL072.... they are the in+ (pin 3 & pin 5)

Connect your circuit up like this (this is the first similar type config cct that 'google image's found, unfortunately there are no values, but make R1 & R2 something in the order of 470k)...
