While rummaging through my parts bin I found a 12GE5 tube. Looked it up and it was primarily used as a deflection amp in TVs. Is there a use for this tube in pedal building or is it one for the scrap pile?

seems like it would be a power tube for a small amp like a 6k6gt or something but I couldnt find any info on it in my brief search. All i found was the reference you mentioned and it takes a 12 pin socket and uses a buttload of heater juice.......may be more trouble than its worth to design around it. You should see if they make them anymore and then make a decision...if you want to think that much about it that is.....good luck. G
I wonder what happens if I .......

The 12GE5 appears to be a compactron version of a 12DQ6B octal tube with slight changes due to the different package like 17.5 watts rather than 18 watts maximum plate dissipation.  It has the same transconductance of 7300 micromhos, the same heater voltage and current and the same voltage limits.  It makes a reasonable power amplifier tube with two in push-pull giving about 35 watts.  Octal sockets are abundant but most compactron sockets are for printed circuit board mounting, ao you should determine whether you can get the sockets (they are available).  The 6DQ6B / 12DQ6B were popular horizontal sweep tubes and use a low screen voltage in either sweep or linear amplifier applications.  It would be good if you can get another one for push-pull.
