What about screenprinting?

I would guess screenprinting only becomes a reasonable option if you plan on doing the same label a lot of times.

Whilst doing art at I got taught how to print direct from photocopies, I can't remember the exact process but I think you took a negative coloured and mirrored photocopy of a contrasty pictures or letters, sprayed it with wd-40 and wiped with alcohol/meths. From this you can print if you roll printing ink (probably water based) onto the it and press it you want it. The ink sticks to the oily paper but not to the photocopy toner, then when its printed  it transfers away from the oily paper onto the black. It might take some refining or a double print to get a thick enough white print. Dulling the black surface your going to print on with fine wire wool first and then lacquer or varnishing on top works best.

I just had a go with my inks and got it to work pretty well. Might be better for effects than lettering though.
