WOW nice !  have a question.. what is the correct position of C5? is it negative connect to + of the LED? and is your layout good for LED LDR combo? bcoz i found that your C5 is larger than i saw in the schematic and other people who made this also C1 has different value.. why? .:) thanks so much.. by the way i like your works

Rick has the transparency turned up so it can be hard to see, but there is dark stripe on C5 for the negative side. Also, beneath C5 the square pad denotes the positive lead whereas the circle is for the negative. Hope this helps.

I talked to the very lovely slade before i built my first Flatline. He's built quite a few, and suggested the value of C1. He also recommended a VTL5C3 over LED/LDR combos for a trouble free build, as well as the TL072. I took his advice.  ;)

Thanks for the reply.. by the way C5 is really backwards the shade part it parallel to LED + sign :)

ps I'll try VLT5C3 and the .0022 C1

What size enclosure would this fit in?
Is there a premade PCB for this pedal?
What able a simple perf board outlay?

DIYLC automatically uses square pads when you place diodes, electros, IC's etc.  I don't think it gives you the option to insert a square solder pad without plonking a component in.

Taylor

You can place a pad, doubleclick it, shape drop-down->square.

It will fit in a 1590A.
AFAIK there is not a premade PCB available, but you could ask Barry.
A PCB layout IS a perf layout too.

Seems an easy build. You guys know how to mod it for use with a bass guitar? And make it kinda more versatile, I mean add some more pots ;p

Getting to building this. Not knowing too awful much about opto's. as you cn see from the pics I'm using the "budget" opto's from Electronics Goldmine .99¢ ea !)

The opto's vary wildly in their resistance - some are over 10m I have a couple at 9m, some at 5m and some waaay low like 480k etc. I see the data sheet for a VTL53 as spec'd by Rick has an off resistance at 10m. What changes would I need to make to use some of the lower resistance opto's ?

Thanks !

Dan

I don't get what you're saying. The square pad denotes the anode on an electrolytic cap in DIYLC (or the "plus" side if you will). Both of my caps are oriented correctly as per the layout.
You can quite clearly see the lighter side of the label (with the - sign on it) of the short squat cap facing "in" and the same label on the tall thin cap facing "out".

just try invert C5 i think the layout is wrong on c5 look at mark's layout :)

Ooops yeah, C5 is the wrong way around according to the schematic. Easy fix. Though I think this is one case where the polarity doesn't matter, as long as there is capacitance there. I've built a couple with the cap 'my way around' with no issues. Try it, if it bothers you - flip it.
