Interesting/Cheap (albeit illegal) Wireless Guitar System

Came across a most unique, hilarious & somewhat inexpensive guitar wireless system last evening...created by a visionary yet slightly wacko electronics DIYer down the street who often seeks solitary refuge in his garage to escape the wife, children, in-laws, telephones etc..

He created a fully functional guitar wireless system by hacking into two old portable SSB (single sideband)transceivers he had lying about. Since they do not modulate with a 'carrier' like a conventional AM CB radio, the outgoing signal can be continually sent somewhat cleanly (barring interference) simply by remaining in transmit mode. The signal is then picked up by the opposing transceiver (set to the same frequency) & routed to an extension speaker or amplifier. Theoretically (& with a properly adjusted antenna system) this thing has a range of 20+ miles! :D

The only problem/issue...it operates near the 10 meter band which is sometimes used by ham radio operators. With a VFO (variable frequency oscillator) he was easily able to find 'clean' airspace but a couple of times his axe-grinding was discovered by someone scanning the bandwith looking for long distance conversations generated by periodic skip conditions. It was kind of funny when one guy from New Zealand picked up this poorly-played Hendrixian guitar signal & thought his ham radio was on the skids!

It actually worked OK through an amplifier but the cabling currently involved in this 'beta' version is almost as extensive as if one were using conventional instrument, speaker & patch cables...he's got to shorten them a bit & standardize the connectors. With all of the miscellaneous adaptors & electrician's tape covering the splices it tends to lack the appearance of a gig/road-worthy set-up. :D

I have a couple of CB transceivers that I could use, but there is another possible transmitter / receiver pair that you could use: a baby monitor.  Each monitor has a selection of two channels you can use so if you have interference on one, you can use another.  After all, a baby crying doesn't sound any better through a Marshall stack, so you have the option to change frequencies.  You might want to repackage it.  When you step onstage in your studded black leathers, neck chains made from anchor chain and cam timing chain, boots with 3" heels and hair extensions  down to your navel, plugging your guitar into a Fisher Price transmitter just might spoil the effect.
