Hi everyone,

I've just been browsing Hammond Mfg's site and seen that they supply pre-painted 1590s.

Does anyone know where to get these in the UK? I've done a google search but it didn't turn up anything useful.

Cheers  :)

deadastronaut

hi manny hammonds are a pain to get in the uk...even unpainted...

i went to rs components trade counter and they advertise they're boxes as hammond...but when you see them they are eddystone, with a hammond sticker
blatantly put over the eddystone one.....hmmmmm..... ::)

a guy on the pics thread just pointed me to gapco.co.uk for real hammonds...cheap too...not painted though.!.but cheap enough to paint yourself... rob.

According to this:

Eddystone = Hammond (?)

they are not the same though....that link is for the eddystone version......they are very sharply squared..

the eddystones have squared corners..and a lighthouse embossed inside..

http://www.hammondmfg.com/Eddyptbl.htm

and the hammonds we see a lot of on here used in the usa are rounded.....much better imo..

hammonds: notice the different corners/edges..

i think it must be a uk/usa moulds  or something....

Interesting...

That said, Mouser sells the pre-painted Hammond 1590B and 1590BB boxes, and they have a UK division, IIRC:

Cheers guys,

I'll check out mouser.
I might just bite the bullet and get some shipped form the US if I can't get any here cos I'm getting sick of everything I own getting covered in paint (I'm really bad at spraying  :icon_sad:)

If you guys are having trouble getting hold of proper unpainted hammond boxes I think bitsbox sell 1590b's and bb's. I've found the build quality on the eddystone boxes I got from Craplin to be pretty poor compared to the proper hammond ones.

deadastronaut

yeah craplins..ha ha...

the ones on bitsbox are the craplins ones too though by the looks of em..

the problem is suppliers quite rightly think they are hammonds..because of the eddystone/hammond link on their site...but we have the uk version which is eddystone...

i got so pissed about this, ive emailed hammond/eddy to ask why the difference...(too much time on my hands i guess)..awaiting a reply... ::)

that gapco looks like proper 'rounded' hammond ones... and cheap too....i'll give them a try soon...

even the ex large box is pretty reasonable compared to some prices ive seen for them.......

as for painting, i dont bother now, i etch everything...no chips...and a nice buffed metal look...classy...and well worth the extra work...permanent....

Yeah I saw this Gapco Site after you mentioned it, £4 for either 1590A, 1590B or BB is pretty sweet and they have some nice switch options... weird but nice...

Bitsbox did at one point do Hammonds, I know this cause I remember the first box I bought from them I only spent 5 minutes polishing by hand and it was fine, these eddystones are just awful for finish, lots of water staining on them that can't be got out, takes alot of work even with electric tools.

Nice to see a U.K. stockist with the 1590DD too (Gapco) need one for my A/DA Board... definitley gunna keep them in mind for the future.

this gapco seems really sound for 125Bs, £4 free postage!

Do you need to etch prime these boxes or is regular primer ok?

I bought a BitsBox enclosure this week. It is labelled "Hammond. Made in UK." It has fairly sharp corners.

There is also Evatron, which have rounded edges and a cool near-mirror finish (although its not a perfect finish, which is a shame). Plus they are a few mm wider than the Hammond, which is a godsend. http://www.evatron.com/index-pag-products-cid-13-sid-130-l-2.html
The photo doesn't actually match the product (the real thing doesn't have ribs inside). Only £1.50 last time I bought from them. They also do screen printing, but they don't have ready-painted enclosures.

Evatron v. Hammond UK:

hi merlinb . they look good....ribbed too...(no jokes)...

did your one from bitsbox have an embossed lighthouse inside the top...?..

My bitsbox one didn't have the Eddystone lighthouse but now that I've checked it it doesn't say hammond in it either. Oops  :icon_redface:

This one doesn't have any of the usual rough machining marks near the base so if it is an eddystone it's certainly the best example I've seen. The finish looks as good as on my hammond boxes.

I took a couple of pics, bitsbox 1590b (left) next to genuine hammond 1590BB (right)

You're not comparing like with like though, the ones Maplin sell are a cheaper range than the 1590B style range, although probably not actually cheaper if you buy them from Maplin. When ever i've bought a box labeled as a 1590B or whatever from a UK supplier that's what I've received, if you buy the cheaper ones that's what you get.

Yeah you're right there slacker, you get what you pay for.

I'm going to be ordering some of the painted ones soon, I might wait for Royal Mail to catch up a bit first though...

skrunk

Farnell do the painted and unfinished Hammonds:

http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/level5/module.jsp?moduleId=en/616469.xml

pricey though for the painted ones,
unfinished 1590B: £5.62
painted 1590B: £12.14  :icon_eek:

deadastronaut

@manny, yep ive got the same as the one on the left...

i bought it from maplins...they put a sticker on it with they're  product code...under they're sticker was a  hammond sticker...

i also bought one from rs and it said hammond on the sticker...both boxes exactly the same......

however,  i have also bought from maplins on other occasions and they are eddystones  with the lighthouse inside...and rough...

the thing is neither of these are  what i would call 'proper hammonds' with the rounded corners/edges.....

example.on the pictures thread...

Oh I don't mind those Hammond clones Bitsbox does, I had one of those before, quite nice, it's the Eddystones I hate, just can't polish the damn things.
