Dr Boogie - needs more bass, less treble (and maybe less gain)???

Hi guys!

I haven't been on here for ages so apologies to anyone who's messaged me who I haven't responded to.

I finally got my Dr Boogie up and running (or rather, someone I know helped me with it), but I'm not happy
with the lack of bass, and the abundance of treble.  Any simple, easy to follow ways to remedy this?

The gain is ok but would be nice to have more scope to it, ways to de-gain a bit?

Kind regards
Phil

Play around with the C11 and C13 values; one of those should make some impact if my memory is correct.

MmmPedals

To lower the gain just lower the gain pot. try anywhere from 100k- 500k

I wanted more bass out of my gaussmarkov DB too... so I put a 500nf in C11 and a 1uf in C12. Sounds bad ass now.. I use a 500k gain pot and it sounds great. I don't like a lot of gain either..  This vid is with a 1M gain pot, but I have the C11 and C12 mods in it:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAZINpIamiI

If I recall correctly the difference between 'normal' Dr. Boogey and the '57' version is that the second one uses 2n5457 jfets (hence the name '57') and the C11 is 10nF (instead of 1nF) to cut some of the highs. I think the gain pot is still 1M.

Awesome, thanks guys...might get onto this tonight.   If anyone have any other ideas, feel to chime in...i'm sure someone someday will benefit from reading this thread.   :)

Yeah, I would also like to know about some cap changes people have made.

philbinator1

Ok I just finished the c11/c12 mods with weird results:  I changed C11 to 560nF (I only had that value lying around)
and now there is less treble, but...at the start of the travel of the pot i get a volume increase, around the middle volume
decreases, and from about 3 oclock onwards it jumps up hugely in treble very quickly.

My change to C12 was to solder 2 560nF caps in parallel (didn't have any 1uF's around) and now the bass control is
basically pointless, if there is a diff. in bass it's so subtle I can't hear it!  Weird.    ???

Oh and i discovered I already used a 500kA pot in there, might change that to 250KA for less gain.

That's really weird.  Did you use electrolytics maybe? If so maybe they're oriented backwards... I used chiklets in mine. Aside from that, this issue is totally beyond my skills.

I did use a 1uF electrolytic for a start, and I believe I oriented it correct with the larger voltage going towards the +ve...but after getting nothing from the bass I
went to the regular box caps.  so yeah, weird.  anyone?  If i can't get a fix i'll just give it to the guy who fixes guitars and amps at the music shop i work at   :D
