Funny bought 200 of these transistors 20 years ago, still got them in a box. The electronic shop sold them to me the lot for 90 dollars, he he he :)

The Iron Chef

hello Eddie,  I have about 2 dozen of the same transistor.  What  project do you plan to use them in?  I experimented with them a year or two ago but never settled on anything particular to build.  Any suggestions?

I build stuff everyday.

But how many of them are "good" Low leakage, decent hfe?

Still undecided on whether this is a desperate cry to sell these transistors in which case this post should be in the For Sale thread...

This is a random gloating post regarding the possible "treasure" (said with fingers making quote marks in the air) that someone feels they have uncovered.

Either way..... Ho Humm..... :icon_rolleyes:

Yeah maybe half will be usable ?
Of that half only a handful will have the high gains needed for truly good sounding pedals.

I agree,and 90$ 20 years ago.
That's about 300$ today,I think the guy at that shop laughed all the way to the bank.

I just finished comparing Mullard OC81's to 4 different Russian Ge types.
I couldnt hear a bit of difference when the gains were close to equal.

I have about 200 Russian Ge's I bought earlier this year  ;)

Cool! Which Russian Ge's and what circuit?

Rangemaster,FF, and Tonebender
GT311,GT313,GT402,and GT404
I personally like the GT311 best because they have the most consistant high gains and smaller size.
The 402 and 404 are higher current devices and the package is in electrical contact to the collector so it has to be kept from grounding out or touching anything else.
But that said if the gains are close I couldn't hear any difference between any of them.

if you get around to measuring hfe and leakage, if there are ones you'll never use, i'll take 'em!

Cool! I have tried all of those in a Fuzz Face and thought they sounded great. Especially the GT402 & GT404! I found the GT402 to be a little noisy in a Tone Bender. All around, though, I love the Russian germanium transistors. Glad you have found good use of them, too!

0.5$ each was a pretty fair price 20 years ago, not a great deal. most electronicstores around here at least, had them for repair purposes. they would most likely had been thrown out shortly after that time if guitarist hadn't gone crazy for them...for anything outside the guitar comunity they would have been considered junk.
GE transistors deteriorate in time and can often loose about half their Hfe value in about 25 years, so checking them for leakage and gain is more important than staring yourself blind at the partnumber. Both R.G. (Geofex website) and Smallbear has write ups on how to get the numbers you'd seak.

the fact that O.P has 1 post total, suggest a few things to me, but I prefere to give him the benefit of a doubt...so, welcome and enjoy your transistors...
