Output buffer that doesn't need Vref?

I was thinking about a conversation we had here a few weeks back.  In it, we talked about the input buffer of the Crybaby that used a Darlington, and a 1.8Meg from V+ feeding the signal into the base of said Darlington. http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=88277.0  (Actually the schem's wrong, and it's a 2.2Meg.  The 1.8Meg appears to be a pulldown on the input.  The schem is missing a part...  Anyway.)

My observation was that this input buffer didn't need Vref, and might come in handy for builds that don't have Vref handy anywhere else on the board.  The Orange Squeezer for instance comes to mind.  Might be nice to have an input buffer on it that uses minimal parts...

So would it be just as effective as an output buffer?  Changing the parts to be suited for output of course (low output impedence, series RC into the base, etc...)

Just kinda thinking out loud I guess.  I was wanting to try this on my Dr. Boogey, as I'm not crazy about the J201 output buffer I'm currently using.  Thoughts?

..kinda related :) T.

Indeed.  Thank you Tomas.  That looks quite simple.   Didn't expect to see a trim pot on the output though.

Look at this schematic for some ideas.

I'm confused Gus.  Which is the output buffer?  Q3?

Q4 and Q2 are bootstrapped buffers.  More predictable than jfets also can have high input resistance.  Adjust operating point with the 100K and 150 divider string(not the 100K to the base)
The direct coupled off the gain stage might not be the best way because you would need to place it before the coupling cap to the wha pot maybe too much lows.

Oh I see what you were saying.  Got it, thanks.  That other thread Tomas started is really good!  Thanks for your help guys.
